Is video game sequel Mafia 4 ever likely to happen? Grand Theft Auto III ranks as one of the most groundbreaking video games of all time as it gave players a huge open-world sandbox to explore at their leisure. Its success quickly led to a glut of open-world games, from the Saint's Row series and all the way to Rockstar's own Red Dead Redemption. The Mafia franchise also belongs to this category, with the first game arriving way back in 2002 and charting the rise of a mobster named Tommy Angelo.

While the Mafia series doesn't match Grand Theft Auto in terms of popularity or sales, the games have drawn a fanbase for their involving stories and characters, in addition to their open worlds. The most recent instalment was 2016's Mafia III, which was set in 1968 and followed Vietnam vet Lincoln Clay (Alex Hernandez), and received good reviews for its strong story and vast sandbox; that said, some reviewers found it's A.I. lacking and that it quickly fell into the same old repetitive gameplay loops.

Many suspected the various teases leading up to the announcement of Mafia: Trilogy would be for a Mafia 4, which didn't turn out to be the case. While Mafia: Definitive Edition is technically a remake, it's proving to be such an overhaul of the first game that it could probably qualify as a whole new title.

The Mafia remasters prove that 2K fully believe in the future of the brand, and with Mafia: Trilogy expected to perform strongly, Mafia 4 will likely come together in the next few years. Each entry tends to focus on a new gangster protagonist and leap ahead in time by around a decade, so Mafia 4 could take place in the late 1970s or early 1980s.
