Netflix's A Madea Homecoming sees Mabel Simmons return to her familial roots, but will there be another Madea movie? First released on February 25th, 2022, A Madea Homecoming follows Tyler Perry's irrepressible Madea as she prepares to welcome her family to celebrate her great-grandson’s graduation from college before hidden secrets threaten to destroy their reunion. A Madea Homecoming is the 12th movie in the celebrated Madea cinematic universe, with many audiences now left wondering whether it will be the last.

To many fans of the Madea franchise, the announcement A Madea Homecoming was being made in 2021 came as a welcome surprise. This was due to Madea creator Tyler Perry's original plans to shelve the matriarchal franchise, with both A Madea Family Funeral and Madea's Farewell Play designed as a fitting send-off for the feisty Mabel Simmons in 2019. Yet Perry soon reversed this decision in June 2021, with the Madea actor and creator stating (per Eurweb) that "The biggest part of me bringing her back was me wanting everybody to laugh…between the pandemic and politics, social injustice and civil unrest...I just wanted to have a place where we can just laugh."

Given these statements, it remains to be seen whether A Madea Homecoming will be the last movie in the long-running Madea film series. Perry has already struggled to put down Mabel Simmons' wig and glasses once in recent memory, with Madea's first retirement lasting less than two years. As a result, here's everything we know regarding another Madea movie, including what its potential story could be.

Is A Madea Homecoming The Last Madea Movie?

As things currently stand, Madea creator Tyler Perry remains tight-lipped on whether A Madea Homecoming will be the last movie in the franchise. Per TooFab, Perry has stated he doesn't know "what will happen next," with Mabel Simmons' long-running narrative once again up in the air. One good piece of news for Madea audiences, however, is the news that there is a Madea sequel in development at Showtime. Tentatively named Mabel, the series will follow Madea in the 1970s, with Tyler Perry planning to use a female actress to portray a young Madea for the first time. At 52, Perry has also begun to sound out retiring and passing the Madea torch to a new generation, with the Madea star stating in the same interview that "I'm looking at the exit here coming up soon, so I'm totally able to hand it off."

What Another Madea Movie's Story Could Be

With no plans currently in place for a follow-up movie to A Madea Homecoming, it is hard to predict what another Madea movie's story could be. Perry's penchant for tackling social issues in his Madea films could be one potential avenue for the next Madea movie to explore further, while any additional franchise installments will likely continue to be centered around Simmons' zany family. Another potential storyline could see the return of Brendan O'Carroll's Agnes Brown following Perry and O'Connell's long-planned Madea and Mrs. Brown's Boys crossover in A Madea Homecoming.
