The dark fantasy anime Made in Abyss was a contender for best anime of the season back in the summer of 2022, and fans who enjoyed the second season will be excited to learn that Riko, Reg, and Nanachi's journey won't be over just yet.

At a special event in Japan on January 15, the Made in Abyss production committee announced that a sequel series to the second season of Made in Abyss, known as the Golden City of Scorching Sun, was approved to enter production. Little has been revealed about the third season at present, but it's safe to assume it will continue to adapt the manga as before. Given that production has only just begun, no release date is available as yet.

Made in Abyss So Far

Made-in-Abyss-Nanachi

Made in Abyss follows Riko, a young orphan girl from the surface world, and Reg, an android boy whom she discovers while exploring the uppermost layers of the Abyss. Riko sees Reg's unusual abilities as her chance to achieve her dream of reaching the bottom of the Abyss, and the pair set off on an adventure they'll never be able to return from. However, the world of the Abyss is cruel, and makes no exceptions for children. Those who've made it to the deeper levels of the Abyss are said to lose their humanity to the Abyss's "curse," and the people that Riko and Reg encounter along the way certainly seem to prove that true. The second season saw Riko and Reg joined by a rabbit girl they met along the way, Nanachi, and the trio arrive in the eponymous Golden City, a land where the curse of the Abyss can't reach. Intercut with Riko, Reg, and Nanachi's scenes in the present are flashbacks to a past exhibition which bears some connection to the city's history.

Aside from the two seasons of television anime, there are also a few Made in Abyss anime films, including the canonical film set between the first and second seasons, known as Dawn of the Deep Soul. The other two Made in Abyss movies recap the story of the first season in an abbreviated form.

The series, known for its dark and gritty tone and fascinating worldbuilding, can be brutal to watch, but much like Riko, fans can't seem to get enough of the mysteries of the Abyss. Fortunately for them, Made in Abyss will continue to delve deeper in its third season, whenever that may be released.
