A new piece of Madame Web fan art imagines Sydney Sweeney as a live-action Spider-Gwen in Sony’s universe. One of Sweeney’s very first acting roles was in NBC’s superhero show, Heroes, back in 2019. The actor went on to cultivate an extensive filmography of supporting roles in projects like Everything SucksThe Handmaid's Tale, and Sharp Objects. Since then, Sweeney has blown up thanks to her portrayal of Cassie Howard in HBO’s Euphoria, and Olivia Mossbacher in The White Lotus. Now, the actress is set to join Sony’s Marvel Universe of Spider-Man characters.

In February, it was announced that Dakota Johnson would star as Julia Carpenter/Madame Web in Sony’s next Spider-Man spinoff movie. Madame Web will be directed by S.J. Clarkson (The Defenders) with a screenplay by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless (Morbius). Last week, it was reported that Johnson had her first Madame Web co-star in Sweeney. However, her role has not yet been revealed and speculation online continues to run rampant about who the Euphoria star could be playing.

Artist Venomhology on Instagram recently shared some new art adding to this speculation. The piece is stunning take on one of Sweeney’s potential but unconfirmed characters in the upcoming Madame Web film. While acknowledging the possibility of the actor playing Black Cat in the post caption, the image imagines Sweeney as Spider-Gwen. Check it out below:

Spider-Gwen was first introduced in Marvel's 2014 Edge of Spider-Verse miniseries, which explores an alternate universe where Gwen Stacy is bitten by a radioactive spider instead of Peter Parker. Sony’s animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse introduced Hailee Steinfeld’s comparable version of the character, who lost her best friend Peter Parker, sending the character’s popularity and live-action demand into the stratosphere. Given Into the Spider-Verse’s presumed influence on Sony/Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: No Way Home, many want Emma Stone to play a Spider-Gwen variant alongside Andrew Garfield's returned Peter Parker/Spider-Man.

Sweeney has long been a fan-favorite option to play Marvel's Felicia Hardy/Black Cat. While Felicity Jones previously appeared in a cameo as Spider-Man’s future love-interest and anti-hero/antagonist in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 alongside Garfield, the character of Black Cat is far from established in Sony’s universe. In addition to this year’s Morbius and the upcoming Kraven the Hunter film starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Madame Web is poised to lead the charge towards female-led movies centering on characters like Spider-Woman, Black Cat, and Silver Sable. That said, it seems more likely Sweeney will play Black Cat as the studio leaves the door open for Stone’s (or even Steinfeld’s) live-action version of Spider-Gwen. However, Venomhology’s art certainly makes a strong argument for the latter.
