New Madame Web set photos reveal Sony’s upcoming film will take place in New York City during the early 2000s. Peter Parker/Spider-Man has enjoyed huge success in the MCU thanks to Sony Pictures and Disney/Marvel Studios’ 2015 deal, with last year’s Spider-Man: No Way Home becoming Sony’s highest-grossing movie of all time. As the MCU continues to expand its multiverse, Sony has attempted to develop its Spider-Man Universe with Venom, Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Morbius, which have yet to feature Tom Holland’s web-slinger. Sony has also green-lit several other spinoffs based on Spider-Man characters, including Kraven the HunterEl Muerto, and Madame Web.

In February, it was announced that Dakota Johnson had been cast as the lead (Cassandra Webb or Julia Carpenter) in Sony’s first movie focusing on a female superhero, Madame Web. The film is being directed by S.J. Clarkson with a screenplay by Kerem Sanga, Matt Sazama, and Burk Sharpless. In addition to Johnson, Madame Web's cast includes Sydney Sweeney, Tahar Rahim, Emma Roberts, Celeste O'Connor, Isabela Merced, and Mike Epps in unknown roles. Aside from being an origin story, plot details are being kept under wraps, though filming began earlier this month. Now, new photos from Madame Web’s set reveal details about the film’s timeline.

The Boston Globe’s Kevin Slane recently shared the first images from Madame Web’s set on Twitter. From the context of the images, the film appears to be set in the early 2000s. The Madame Web set photos feature pay phones, newspaper boxes, and a billboard for Beyoncé's first solo album, Dangerously in Love, which was released worldwide on June 20, 2003. These images and Slane’s description appear to confirm that Madame Web will take place at least partially in early-21st century New York City. Being that Sony’s Venom, Morbius, and Kraven the Hunter films all take place in the present, it’s curious to see that Madame Web will utilize the same period in which Sam Raimi's original Spider-Man trilogy was released in theaters. After No Way Home brought together three generations Spider-Man cinema, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Men re-entered pop culture zeitgeist. Given how Let There Be Carnage and Morbius’ credits scenes tie into No Way Home, the multiverse is the key to the future of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. So, it wouldn’t be surprising if Madame Web somehow revisits Raimi’s trilogy or Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man films.

In the comics, the character of Madame Web possesses psychic sensory powers, which allows her mind to traverse the Web of Life and Destiny — the connective tissue holding the entire multiverse together. In short, Madame Web can perceive all that is, was, will, and could be, which may account for this travel back in time. This aspect of her character is presumably why Sony chose to focus on Madame Web, who lacks the brand recognition of Spider-Gwen or Spider-Woman. The upcoming Madame Web presents a tremendous number of possibilities and will likely be the Spider-Verse movie that solves Sony's Morbius problems. While it’ll be a while before details surrounding the film are revealed, the prospect of Madame Web revisiting a 00s era Spider-Man is more than intriguing.
