Don Draper might be positioned in the lead role in Mad Men, and someone who is very successful within the advertising world, but is he actually good at his job? While Don finds himself in a great spot within the industry for the majority of the show, that doesn't mean that everything he does is perfect.

Of course, Don's private life and his infidelity cause him a lot of problems throughout the show. But when it comes to his work life, Don always tries to do great work. That said, he isn't perfect all the time, no matter how he might present himself.

He's Good: He Has Constant Ideas

Something that is clear throughout Mad Men is that Don Draper is massively respected within the advertising world, and the reason for that is his ideas. He is always thinking about ways to get the best work done, whether it is his Coca-Cola advert, or deciding to feature food that required ketchup to help Heinz.

Don is always thinking outside of the box, and that is what separates him from the rest. It makes him one of the best brains in the advertising world, often seen as a genius by many.

He Isn't Good: He's Confrontational

Don Draper is a self-assured, confident man and while that is helpful a lot of the time, it also causes a lot of problems. The main reason for that is the fact that he often falls out with other members of staff, which isn't great in an industry where teamwork is crucial.

Whether it's a heated exchange with Peggy, purposefully getting Roger drunk so he is sick in front of clients, or his longstanding issues with Harry, Don has plenty of issues with others.

He's Good: He's Dedicated

While Don likes to have fun in his personal life, there is no denying he is a hard worker. He is always in the office, and while he sometimes might just be sleeping, the majority of the time, he is putting the effort in to improve things.

Don often takes his work home with him as well, constantly thinking about different situations and wanting to get everything right. The pressure he puts on himself leads to him burning out towards the end of the show, but his ability to always be working is something that makes him good at his job.

He Isn't Good: He Sleeps With His Staff

Office romances are realistic. However, because Don Draper is a partner and is in a position of power, his decision to sleep with several members of his staff isn't a wise one.

Marrying Megan eventually led to her leaving the company, despite her being a good member of staff. Meanwhile, his affair with Rachel Menken caused serious tension and made working with her company hard work, and his one-night stand with Allison leads to her having to leave the job as well.

He's Good: He's A Hustler

The entire manner in which Don Draper gets his job in the first place, by pushing Roger Sterling and continuing to hustle for a role is proof of why he's good at his job. He is someone who won't take no for an answer and that is a great trait to have in many lines of work.

This rings true throughout the show, with Don constantly working hard, looking for the biggest potential clients, and not being afraid to chase them down. This type of worker is valuable and it's why Don excels.

He Isn't Good: He Causes Lots Of Interruption

Drama seems to follow Don wherever he goes, and it often ends up coming to his office as well. Whether it's constant phone calls from the various people in his life or Sally Draper running away from Betty and heading to his office, Don isn't great at keeping his work life and personal life separate, to say the least.

This type of drama isn't ideal for Don in the working environment. The other characters never seem to have this many issues at work, and the constant interruption isn't conducive to great work.

He's Good: He Brings The Best Out In Others

Peggy and Don's friendship

While his methods might not always make others happy, there's no denying Don Draper has the ability to bring the best out in other people. Keeping Peggy Olson at work throughout her birthday and making her miss a meal doesn't make him a nice person, the fact she goes on to be so successful proves his methods do work.

Don is great at pushing his staff to their absolute limit in order to bring out the best work possible. This is something that he does better than others in the company, and while he sometimes relies on their ideas, it proves he wants to bring the company forward.

He Isn't Good: He Acts Out

Don Draper is in a position of power throughout his career in Mad Men, allowing him to be partner, but that doesn't mean he is necessarily trustworthy. Don is quite an impulsive person who makes rash decisions that can impact the entire company.

The decision to publicly write about quitting tobacco or deciding to partner up with Ted is all done without consenting the other people he works with and comes at a big risk. Sometimes these risks pay off and other times, they don't, but it's more the lack of trust that causes problems.

He's Good: His Great Pitches

The main reason why Don Draper is considered to be fantastic at his job is because of his pitching ability. There is nobody else in the series that comes anywhere near Don in terms of his skill, because of his confidence and clarity when delivering his pitches.

Don is a masterful storyteller and he does a great job at selling people his ideas in order to gain the company as much business as possible. While his job is in creating great ideas, without a good pitch, these ideas mean nothing, and this is Don's battlefield, with the famous Kodak carousel pitch being a great example of what he can do.

He Isn't Good: He Relies On Alcohol At Work

While this issue is partially down to being a sign of the times, Don, in particular, seemed to be reliant on having a drink to get through a work day or to get the creative juices flowing.

He struggled to get work done without a drink and his drunken moments led to some serious problems, at times. Whether it meant a couple of disastrous pitches due to being drunk or blowing up on others in the office, alcohol made him a hothead, at times, and it impacted his work.
