Don Draper's return to television is finally on the horizon. While making an appearance on comedian Doug Benson's podcast: Doug Loves Movies, actor Jon Hamm delivered the date we'll finally see Mad Men season 5.
According to Hamm, we can all gather round the television and enjoy the heavy drinking and smoking antics of Madison Avenue’s finest starting in late March on AMC.
Due to some rather intense contract negotiations between series creator Matthew Weiner and AMC, it's been well over a year since Mad Men last graced the airwaves. In fact, by the time season 5 bows in March, it will have been more than 16 months without any worthwhile '60s stylings on television - though The Playboy Club and Pan Am certainly gave it the old college try.
While the break may have left an extraordinarily long void in AMC’s typically lauded line-up, the absence of Mad Men at least opened the door for another television show to claim the Emmy for best drama – which Weiner’s series has managed to take home four consecutive times.
When the show makes its triumphant return, however, all eyes will be on Jon Hamm – in more ways than one. In addition to his usual turn as star of the period drama, Hamm will be stepping behind the camera for the first time, to try his hand at directing the fifth season’s premiere episode.
What might take place in Hamm’s directorial debut is another question entirely. Of course, in typical Matthew Weiner fashion, there is virtually nothing to go on in terms of the season’s storyline. But after Weiner dropped a few nuggets of how he would like to see the series end, in what will be the seventh season, we can at least surmise that season 5 will begin to seed some notion of how a conclusion will come to be.
When we last saw Don (all the way back in October of 2010), he was thinking of the present by proposing to his secretary Megan Calvet (Jessica Paré), in an episode ironically entitled ‘Tomorrowland.’ Come March, fans will get to see what that promise of tomorrow held, and where the men and women of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce are headed – and perhaps (given the hiatus) where they have been.
To refresh everyone’s memory, and to initiate the uninitiated, AMC is currently rerunning the entire series leading up to the premiere of season 5. As the date approaches, expect the return of Mad Men to be treated with a great deal of pomp and circumstance by the network – which is undoubtedly clearing some shelf space in expectation of another Emmy.
Mad Men returns Sunday, March 25 on AMC.
