Mad Max: Fury Road star Nicholas Hoult recently explained why his War Boy character Nux is not in the upcoming Furiosa prequel film. Following Max's (Tom Hardy) capture by Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne), his one-armed war captain Furiosa (Charlize Theron) smuggled the warlord's five wives from his secured compound in hopes to live free in the Green Place of Many Mothers. Joe sends his fiercely loyal War Boys on an epic chase across a post-apocalyptic wasteland to retrieve those he believes are his property.

Speaking with ComicBook, Hoult addressed why Nux will not feature in the Furiosa prequel movie. With Furiosa taking place many years before the events of Mad Max: Fury Road, the actor admitted that his character would have been far too young to factor into the events of the upcoming film. Read Hoult's full quote below:

"I knew going into Fury Road, I knew all of Nux's life up until the moment we meet him in that film. And obviously as a prequel, it's earlier. Nux would've maybe just about been born and I don't think I could play a six-month-old or a year old. It would be a stretch for me."

How Furiosa Changes the Franchise

Queen's Gambit and The Super Mario Bros. Movie star Anya Taylor-Joy plays a younger Furiosa in the Mad Max: Fury Road prequel. Set to be an origin story for the titular character, Furiosa will be the first film in the series set out of chronological order and to not feature franchise lead Max. The prequel will see Furiosa taken from the Green Place of Many Mothers by tyrannical Warlord Dementus and his Biker Horde. When the group comes across Immortan Joe's Citadel community, the two violent groups will fight for control while Furiosa does what she can to survive.

Mad Max movies generally take place over a relatively short period. The bulk of Mad Max: Fury Road focused on a frenetic chase that took place over a very short period of time. Calling the upcoming prequel movie "epic," Taylor-Joy recently revealed that Furiosa will feature an extended timeline. Although details of the story's scope have yet to be revealed, the new film may encompass portions of the titular character's childhood.

Rounding out the cast is The Lazarus Project's Tom Burke, and Mad Max: Fury Road returning stars Nathan Jones and Angus Sampson as Rictus Erectus and The Organic Mechanic respectively. Furiosa is slated to release in theaters May 24, 2024.
