Chris Hemsworth has confirmed his casting in the upcoming Mad Max prequel with a sweet post on social media. In 2015, director George Miller revived his post-apocalyptic franchise with Mad Max: Fury Road. Starring Tom Hardy as Max Rockatansky and Charlize Theron as Imperator Furiosa, Fury Road told a new story of survival amid a desert wasteland. It was a critical hit, garnering a whopping 10 Oscar nominations. Not long after Fury Road's release, Miller indicated he was planning on developing sequels, but they have been slow to arrive.

Progress on the next Mad Max film began to emerge this year, with reports that Miller was exploring a prequel centered on Furiosa, who has emerged as a major fan favorite over the years. Then, yesterday, news broke that Anya Taylor-Joy has been cast as the young Furiosa, signaling a big milestone for the project. Additionally, Hemsworth and Watchmen star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will appear in undisclosed roles. Major plot details and a timeline for the film are still being kept under wraps.

Following the news of the Mad Max prequel's castings, Hemsworth took to social media to confirm the announcement. While Hemsworth didn't give any hints about who he will be playing or where the story will go, he did say he's "Pretty damn fired up to be a part of a franchise that meant the world to me as a kid growing up in Australia." Hemsworth shared his excitement about being directed by Miller himself and participating in Furiosa's origin story. He concluded his message with, "Huge respect to George, Mel [Gibson], Charlize, Tom and all the cast and crew who helped build this epic world. I'll do my best to continue the tradition of cinematic badassery." You can see his full post down below.

Before joining the wasteland with Taylor-Joy and Abdul-Mateen, Hemsworth will reprise his role as Thor Odinson for the MCU's Thor: Love and Thunder. Fans are very excited to see him play the God of Thunder once more, but they'll undoubtedly also be thrilled to see him star in the world of Mad Max. Hemsworth's personal connection to the franchise makes his casting even more poignant, and it'll be quite interesting to see who he ends up playing. Perhaps his character has a connection to Furiosa, one that could even relate to her family.

Of course, everything involving the Mad Max prequel is just speculation right now. Many had expected Theron to return to the role since she was the one who originated it, but now it's official that Miller is pursuing a new direction. The casting announcement for the new Mad Max emphasized that the film hasn't been officially greenlit yet, but the involvement of big names like Hemsworth, Abdul-Mateen, Taylor-Joy, and Miller could help move it along. There's a lot of excitement surrounding the Furiosa prequel, particularly from its own stars, so hopefully more progress will be made soon.
