There's an obvious release date for Mad Max 5 to hit. There's been no better franchise comeback in recent years than Mad Max: Fury Road. By the time it hit scenes in 2015, the series had been dormant for 30 years, but despite a long development period and a troubled production, it was hailed as one of the best action films of the 21st Century. Fury Road was in the works for so long that it allowed co-creator/director George Miller to work on concepts for another sequel, in addition to spinoff Furiosa.

That will be Miller's next offering, with Furiosa acting as a prequel that tells the origins of the titular road warrior. Anya Taylor-Joy plays the title role, with Chris Hemsworth co-starring. Furiosa is on course for a 2024 release, but fans of Max are wondering when - or even if - the Road Warrior will return. The working title for the next adventure is Mad Max: The Wasteland, though plot details have yet to be revealed. It's also unknown if Tom Hardy will step back into Max's shoes again, despite being signed to sequels following Fury Road.

2029 Is Mad Max 5's Best Release Date

Miller has been known to take his time developing projects, which has - in almost every instance - paid off. Given that Mad Max: Fury Road is labeled a classic, few would argue with its long development time. Hopefully, the same will be true of Furiosa, which will arrive nine years on from Fury Road's success. The script for Mad Max 5 is in development - per Miller's last update - but the best release date for the sequel is 2029, as that will mark the 50th anniversary of the original movie.

Mad Max roared onto screens in April 1979 in Australia - though it didn't arrive in America until March 1980 - and transformed the careers of both Miller and Mel Gibson. For both the director and the franchise, the 50th anniversary will mark a very special occasion, and it would only be fitting to have Mad Max: The Wasteland arrive in time to celebrate it. It would also give Miller plenty of lead time to assemble the sequel following Furiosa's release, though he may wish to work on an original project in between.

How Likely Is Mad Max 5?

Just because Miller has concepts in place for Mad Max 5 and possibly 6, that doesn't mean they will definitely happen. If Furiosa - which can explain the apocalypse - works, he may decide to pursue a direct sequel to that instead of returning to Max. That said, the filmmaker is deeply in love with the world he created, and while Fury Road would serve as a great cinematic goodbye to the character, the chances of Mad Max: The Wasteland happening feel good. Miller will keep making movies so long as he's able, and it's hard to imagine he doesn't have at least one more Max adventure left in the tank.
