Here's how Jack Dalton exited the CBS reboot of MacGyver. The original MacGyver starred Richard Dean Anderson (Stargate SG-1) as the titular character, who worked for the Phoenix Foundation. The show became famous for MacGyver's ability to solve just about any problem by applying a little bit of science, and building useful gadgets out of everyday objects like paperclips or toothpicks. The show built up a solid following and ran for seven seasons, coming to an end in 1992. The character is now a pop culture icon and was parodied on Saturday Night Live with the MacGruber character played by Will Forte; a film version later arrived in 2010.

MacGyver received a reboot series in 2016, which cast Lucas Till (Monster Trucks) as the new lead. The original pilot for the show was scrapped after a negative reception, with James Wan (Aquaman) coming on to direct a new pilot. The basic formula for the new MacGyver is similar to the original series, with the character being another resourceful agent for the Phoenix Foundation. While the show isn't hugely popular with critics its been a solid success for CBS and has run for four seasons thus far; it also crossed over with their Hawaii Five-0 reboot.

The character of Jack Dalton was played by Bruce McGill (Shades Of Blue) in the original MacGyver, with George Eads taking over for the reboot. Eads actually played a different character called Lincoln in the first pilot before the show was retooled. A big part of the charm of the new series was the breezy humor and chemistry between Till and Eads. Mac and Jack might be polar opposites in how they solve problems, with the latter preferring more explosive methods, but their friendship remains rock solid.

Lucas Till and George Eads MacGyver CBS

George Eads asked to be released early from his contract for MacGyver, with Jack Dalton making his exit in the fourteenth episode of season 3. "Father + Bride + Betrayal" features Mac and the team becoming embroiled in the murder of an arms dealer during his daughter's wedding, and after getting through that sticky situation, Jack announces he's leaving. He's joining the hunt for a notorious terrorist called Tiberius Kovac, whom he thought was dead until photos surfaced that proved otherwise. Jack bids an emotional goodbye to MacGyver and the team.

Jack's exit from the show feels quite open, however, so it's likely the character will return in some form in a future episode of MacGyver to resolve this storyline. Jack's replacement came in the form of Desi (Levy Tran, The Haunting Of Hill House), and while the dynamic between her and Mac isn't quite the same, it proved the show would survive beyond Jack.
