Idris Elba has revealed that a Luther movie is close to happening, which will continue the story of DCI John Luther from the beloved BBC series. The series, which premiered on the BBC in 2010, ran for five seasons on the network, garnering a passionate fanbase that was bolstered when it came to Netflix. In fact, John Luther is considered to be one of Elba's best roles to date. Throughout its run, the series has remained a critical darling.

Luther follows the story of DCI John Luther, a highly skilled and intelligent murder detective in London, who often takes on cases involving serial killers and lets his methods and personality get him into hot water. Luther eventually forms a kinship with one of the serial killers he is tasked with tracking down, Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson). In fact, not only do the two become close friends, but Morgan's expertise in murder aids Luther in solving crimes committed by other killers of her kind. The series aired season 5 on the BBC in early 2019, leaving fans with plenty of lingering questions after its finale.

According to Deadline, Idris Elba has revealed that a Luther movie is very close to happening. When asked about the future of the series in a recent press junket, Elba stated, "I’ve made it very clear that I’d like to see Luther come back as a film. And I can tell you this, that we are this close to making a film of Luther." He also firmly expressed that there are no "formal plans" for another proper season of the series at this time.

Elba and series creator Neil Cross has been busy in recent years, causing there to be a significant gap between Luther season 4 and 5. Elba has been especially preoccupied, starring in high-profile films such as Star Trek Beyond, The Dark Tower, Avengers: Infinity War, Hobbs And Shaw, and Turn Up Charlie, a comedy series for Netflix. In the interim, Cross has made another television series for Hulu, Hard Sun, which wasn't as well-received as Luther.

Luther is often considered one of the best series to grace the BBC. The dark, gruesome, and highly engaging storytelling, coupled with Elba's consistently terrific performance as the titular character, made it one of the best shows on television. However, it's been disappointing to watch the show slowly fade away, with no new season on the horizon. Fortunately, given Elba's comments, a film continuing the story of the series could be headed towards fans. Cross has previously stated that he wanted to end the series with a movie, leading fans to believe this may be the last time they see the character. However, they will have to wait and see if a Luther film comes to light after all and hope for the best in the meantime.
