The trailer for Part 2 of Netflix’s Lupin teases more action, as Assane Diop goes on the warpath to rescue his son. The series tells the story of Diop (Omar Sy), a professional thief. The only son of an immigrant from Senegal, who moved to France with hopes of a better life for his child. Diop’s father ends up being framed for the theft of an expensive diamond necklace. He ultimately hangs himself in his prison cell out of shame, leaving behind a teenaged Diop to be an orphan. As an adult, thanks to inspiration inspired by a book about a gentleman thief named Arsène Lupin, Diop seeks revenge against those that framed his father.

The series, created by George Kay and François Uzan, has been a hit since it premiered on Netflix back in January. Sy’s lead performance as Assane Diop and the show’s propulsive energy has garnered specific praise, with critics arguing that the show’s blend of charm and suspense outweighed potential plot holes. The first part of Lupin, consisting of five episodes, has also benefited from positive buzz. The thriller has the distinction of being the first French series to crack Netflix’s Top 10 rankings in the U.S.

Now, with Lupin Part 2 slated to debut in the summer, a preview of the remaining five episodes has been released by Netflix. The teaser reveals that the show intends to pick up right where it left off, with Diop reeling from the fact that his son had been kidnapped. The sneak peek is in some ways reminiscent of Liam Neeson in Taken, as the protagonist vows to do anything and everything in his power to save his family. You can check it below.

While some fans might be worried that Lupin is moving away from some of the elements that has made it popular, scaling back on heists in favor of highlighting more action, it’s worth noting that the second part of the thriller could unfold differently than the trailer suggests. Diop’s rush to save his son could be incorporated with other storylines. Alternatively, it could serve as the driving force of Lupin Part 2 while the main character also deals with mini-arcs and episodic plots. It could also be the case that, with a relatively straightforward action teaser, Netflix is hoping to draw in subscribers that haven’t yet sampled the show.

There has already been speculation that Lupin Part 2 will be completely different, with Diop no longer in control and even potentially reaching out for help. In that sense, it could be a good thing. If the show is to continue garnering attention and acclaim, it’s important that the main character evolves beyond the suave operator that viewers were initially introduced to in the first batch of episodes. That sort of complexity and depth could lead Lupin to achieve more depth in the long run.
