Omar Sy, star of Netflix’s popular French crime drama Lupin, has signed a lucrative multi-picture deal with the streaming service. Sy, who established himself in the French movie industry first, reached Hollywood fame after the release of the film Les Intouchables. The actor has also appeared in recent blockbusters including X-Men: Days Of Future Past and Jurassic World, but it was his recent role as the lead in Lupin that earned him newfound recognition. George Kay’s series, which follows the story of master thief Assane Diop, released its season 2 on Netflix in June, further cementing its place as one of the platform’s most popular original shows.

Sy’s relationship with the streaming giant has just become a lot more secure, as Variety reports that Sy has signed a multi-year film deal with Netflix, becoming another creative talent to commit to his future to the platform. The deal will see Sy star in multiple original films for Netflix, and also partners the company with his own LA/Paris-based production company. Furthermore, Sy will act as an executive producer on several projects for Netflix, having previously been a creative producer on several episodes of Lupin.

The actor becomes the first French-cinema talent to sign such an agreement with the platform, which has previously penned similar deals with Adam Sandler, Steven Spielberg, and even Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. In the current age of content and entertainment, Netflix is seen as one of the new heavyweights of the film and TV industry, competing with Prime Video and other recent competitors such as HBO Max and Disney+. The platforms are beginning to sign exclusive deals with actors, producers and directors to ensure their content is as unique and unmissable as anything else on the market, so Netflix’s continued business model makes a lot of sense. What's more, it should prove positive for Omar Sy’s future career plans as both a performer and producer, allowing the actor to capitalize on the attention garnered from his stellar performance as the sly gentleman burglar in Lupin.
