Warning: contains a preview for Star Wars #20!

Thanks to a first look at Marvel Comics' December Star Wars titles, it's been revealed that Luke Skywalker received more training from Jedi Master Yoda after Empire Strikes Back. While Luke left Dagobah early to go save his friends trapped on Cloud City, it appears as though Luke's training with Yoda didn't end there. Marvel's Star Wars series takes place between Empire and Return of the Jedi, and has seen Luke determined to continue his Jedi path despite having learned that Darth Vader is his father. As such, it looks as though Luke's journey will unearth further wisdom from his master, though the new solicitation for Star Wars #20 reveals that it won't involve a return to Dagobah and Yoda's hut.

In recent issues of Star Wars from Charles Soule and Ramon Rosanas, Luke has been doing all that he can to follow the will of the Force, determined to learn and become a Jedi despite his villainous father Darth Vader's plans for him. While he lost his lightsaber after Vader cut off his hand during their duel on Bespin, Luke was later led to an ancient Jedi temple where he found a new yellow-bladed lightsaber, signifying his resolve to keep learning and growing as a Jedi. Now, it appears as though Luke will be taking the next step in his ongoing training, helping to explain his Jedi Knight status by the time Return of the Jedi begins.

Thanks to StarWars.com revealing a first look at Marvel's December solicitations, fans can see the cover art for the upcoming Star Wars #20 sees Luke wearing the traditional robes of the Jedi Order. Not only that, but he's also seen holding a Jedi holocron projecting none other than Jedi Master Yoda himself. As a result, it looks as though Luke will be receiving additional training from his wise and powerful master, and it's going to be interesting to see what new insights he'll no doubt learn during the period between Episodes V and VI. Enjoy the cover art and synopsis for the issue:

  • LUKE SKYWALKER has found a key piece of instruction in his journey along the JEDI path – the voice of his teacher, JEDI MASTER YODA.
  • But the lesson Luke must learn will not be taught by Yoda, and it will take – and give – more than the young Skywalker could ever have imagined.

It seems Luke will encounter Yoda not in person, but through words recorded on the holocron, though the issue's summary teases that another source will also teach him a vital though costly lesson. Given the nature of holocrons as storage devices used by the Jedi to protect their teachings and secrets, Luke may be learning from a training module taught by Yoda recorded years prior during the days of the Republic, or even have stumbled across secrets that will lead him to his mysterious second lesson.

In the current comics, Luke has explicitly stated that he has not learned enough to face Darth Vader again, refusing to engage him even to save Han and Leia. Fans know that Luke will progress in his training and eventually face his father, and it seems Star Wars #20 will depict how that comes to be. Star Wars fans thought they knew everything Yoda taught Luke in his journey, but in December, Marvel will reveal more of what Luke Skywalker learned from his master after Empire Strikes Back.
