We first met street-level hero Luke Cage (Mike Colter) in the second installment of the Marvel/Netflix partnership, Jessica Jones. Both Daredevil and Jessica Jones have become wildly popular for their dark, gritty tone and more mature themes, which set them apart from the lighter-hearted fare of the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, while still keeping them loosely connected. Based on what we've seen so far from Luke Cage, we can hopefully expect another hit when it premieres this fall.
Luke Cage, already being compared to The Wire as a gritty crime drama, sees its titular hero given superpowers after volunteering for a medical experiment in prison. Luke finds himself with enhanced strength and bulletproof skin, and uses these abilities to gain his freedom and begin a new life as a hero for hire.
The newest trailer for Luke Cage has now been released, and it not only offers plenty of insight into Luke's own life, but also introduces some of the other major players in the series - both allies and enemies. Fans of the comics will no doubt be amused to see Luke emerging from his "fish tank" in headgear and wrist guards that just so happen to resemble the character's classic Power Man costume - though this may be as close as we get to seeing it in the series.
Luke Cage, from legendary hip hop culture journalist and showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker, is clearly going for going for heavy drama with even heavier action, featuring a soundtrack that pays homage lyricists of the ’90s. Coker, who also wrote a few episodes of Luke Cage, described the show as being “a powerful fusion of dark drama, hip-hop, and classic superhero action.”
The upcoming show also stars Mahershala Ali (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 & 2) as Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes, Alfre Woodard (State of Affairs) as Mariah Dillard, Simone Missick (Ray Donovan) as Misty Knight, Theo Rossi (Sons of Anarchy) as Shades, and Rosario Dawson reprising her Daredevil and Jessica Jones role as Claire Temple.
Daredevil season 1 & 2 and Jessica Jones season 1 are now available on Netflix. Luke Cage season 1 will arrive on September 30th, 2016. The Defenders and Iron Fist arrive in 2017. Release dates for Jessica Jones season 2, The Punisher and Daredevil season 3 have not yet been announced.
