Luke Cage Gets a Jessica Jones Character Poster

Mike Colter talks Luke Cage TV Series

Netflix launched their New York City-based corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in spring of 2015 when the first season of Daredevil debuted to praise from both critics and fans. The streaming service followed up that release with season 1 of Jessica Jones in late 2015, another series that was well-received by critics, fans, and casual viewers alike. Now in 2016, Netflix is gearing up to launch the second season of Daredevil - which will introduce fellow Marvel characters Frank Castle a.k.a. The Punisher (Jon Bernthal)  and Elektra (Elodie Yung). Also set to arrive in 2016 is the first season of the Luke Cage standalone series.

Luke Cage (Mike Colter) first appeared in Marvel and Netflix's Defenders universe as an ally/romantic interest to Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) during her solo series. Although the premiere date for Luke Cage has yet to be announced, a new image of the Hero For Hire character has been released.

The Jessica Jones Twitter account released a new character poster (below) for Luke Cage, in the purple style of much of the other imagery from the show's first season. This isn't the first time Jessica Jones has released a Luke Cage-related photo; the Twitter account previously tweeted an image that teased a November release date - though later rumors suggested Luke Cage season 1 will arrive in August.

Although the Luke Cage character poster doesn't appear to offer any new information, it's possible the purple scrawl of Luke's name in the bottom right-hand corner is teasing the standalone series' logo. If the previously-released promo photo was, in fact, teasing a November release date, then it wouldn't be unheard of for the Jessica Jones' Twitter to drop hints about the Luke Cage solo series. But, that remains to be seen.

We likely won't know much about Luke Cage season 1 until after Daredevil season 2 premieres. As has been the case with Jessica Jones season 1 and the second season of Daredevil, Netflix and Marvel have generally held back promoting the next show on their slate until after the immediate upcoming series had premiered. So, we didn't hear much about Jessica Jones until well after Daredevil season 1 debuted, and information about Daredevil season 2 didn't truly begin to arrive until after Jessica Jones had premiered.

Of course, with more seasons and shows potentially being added to the Marvel/Netflix slate - reports surfaced during the 2016 Winter TCAs that they were developing a Punisher spinoff, and Netflix's Ted Sarandos has said that he's open to even more MCU spinoffs - the release schedule may become even more condensed than originally planned. Though Netflix originally planned to release Marvel series 8-15 months apart, Jessica Jones arrived seven months after Daredevil, and season 2 of Daredevil will debut four months after Jessica Jones season 1.

So, with Luke Cage possibly arriving as early as August, or as late as November, it's likely we won't hear much more about the show until after Daredevil season 2 premieres - though it seems Luke Cage himself (or at least his bar) will appear in the second season of Daredevil.

Daredevil season 1 and Jessica Jones season 1 are now available on Netflix. Daredevil season 2 will debut on Netflix on March 18th, 2016, followed by Luke Cage season 1 later in 2016. Release dates for Jessica Jones season 2, Iron Fist, and The Defenders on Netflix have not yet been announced. We’ll keep you updated on the Punisher spinoff as development continues.
