This latest news only adds to the swirl of rumors surrounding the cast of New Moon. The film is already poised to be a box office juggernaut, considering how Meyer's slavishly loyal fan-base helped catapult Twilight to a $178 million domestic gross at the box office this past fall. I'm sure many a young actor is trying to get aboard this money train right about now.
According to reports, Hale was contacted by Twist Magazine about her potential role in New Moon and had this to say on the subject:
“Well, I did read [for the role of Jane]. We had some talks about it. But I think they just offered it to Dakota Fanning – the role I was interested in – which is great. I’m a huge fan of her! So, I think she’ll probably take that. And I mean, as of right now, I’m not sure if it’s going to work out. But I’m definitely still going to see it!”
That quote would certainly support the previously reported rumor that Dakota Fanning would be taking on the role of Jane. So where does that leave Hale? Why, praying for whatever role she can get her hands on, of course!
“I’d take any role! Leah Clearwater, but I think there’s already talks with somebody else. I think they’ve already offered it to someone. I mean, we’ll see. If not, it’s all good.”
That "somebody else" that Hale refers to is High School Musical starlet Vanessa Hudgens, who was rumored to be at the top of the casting list for the role of "feisty werewolf" Leah. Poor Hale, seems like all the best roles are all getting filled.
For now it's looking like Lucy Hale might have a hard time finding a spot for herself in the cast of New Moon, but you never know, there's always a chance a spot might open up for her. Maybe the filmmakers will need some extra extras?
New Moon is still on the fast track for a November 2009 release. It will be directed by Chris Weitz, who will replace Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke at the helm.
