Based on the novel by Jessica Knoll, Luckiest Girl Alive recently dropped on Netflix bringing back Mila Kunis in fine form as she plays a writer whose life seems to be perfect on the surface but whose traumatic past catches upon her in unprecedented ways.

That 70s Show alum is also joined by other mainstream faces such as Ratched's Finn Wittrock and Godless's Scoot Nairy. Even veterans like Jennifer Beals from Flashdance and Connie Britton from The White Lotus join the ensemble of this gripping psychological drama.

Meg Griffin looking sideways in Family Guy

The titular "Luckiest Girl Alive" is played by Mila Kunis who sinks her teeth into the character of Ani Fanelli, a successful magazine writer who is haunted by a traumatic incident at high school.

Kunis needs no introduction given her initial appearances in That 70s Show which was followed by playing main characters in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Friends With Benefits, and Black Swan. A credit that displays Kunis' versatility as an actor is her role as Meg Griffin in Seth McFarlane's long-running animated series Family Guy. While Meg is somewhat smarter than the rest of her outlandish family, she often becomes the scapegoat in the Griffin household.

Chiara Aurelia as Sheila screaming in Fear Street Part 2 1978

Ani's high school years are captured by Chiara Aurelia who plays a younger version of Mila Kunis' character. The rising star has been associated with Netflix projects in the past, particularly in the horror genre with Gerald's Game and Fear Street Part Two: 1978.

The latter is the second chapter of RL Stine's Fear Street trilogy that deals with a group of teenagers traveling through different timelines to undo a witch's curse plaguing their small town. In 1978, the action takes place in the Sunnyvale Camp where Aurelia's Sheila serves as a bully, accusing the protagonist of stealing and even being a witch. While both are engaging characters, Aurelia gets to portray a more vulnerable side to her acting abilities in Luckiest Girl Alive.

Nurse Ratched and Edmund face off in Ratched

Ani's fiancé seems like the perfect guy but when Ani's past catches up to her, his insensitivity, and ultimately their lack of compatibility comes to the fore. Finn Wittrock plays the character in Luckiest Girl Alive.

Wittrock is mostly known for his collaborations with Ryan Murphy, having appeared in multiple seasons of the horror anthology series American Horror Story and Ratched. The 2020 prequel to One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Ratched tells the origin story of the titular nurse who turns into a mean-spirited monster for her patients. Wittrock steps in the shoes of the homicidal Edmund who is also Ratched's foster brother, complicating matters for the both of them.

Scoot McNairy - Godless (2017)

Scoot McNairy in deep thought in Godless

A scholarship student, young Ani feels insecure being around the elite students of her private school in Luckiest Girl Alive. One of the few people who hears her concerns is her teacher Andrew Larson, a role taken on by character actor Scoot McNairy.

With supporting roles ranging from Gone Girl to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, McNairy received a meatier part when he joined the cast of the Western action series Godless. Set in a town that is mostly inhabited by widowed women, Godless details their fight against a notorious bandit with the action playing in typical Wild West style. McNairy's Bill McNue is the town's Sheriff who attempts to take a pacifist approach but eventually joins the battle. While very different to Luckiest Girl Alive, McNairy proves his worth as a strong actor in both projects.

Connie Britton - The White Lotus (2021-)

Connie Britton as Nicole Mossbacher standing and looking worried in The White Lotus on HBO Max

Ani's overbearing mother Dinah has a few secrets of her own as the plot progresses. The Friday Night Lights star seems to be on a streak when it comes to playing mothers with strained relationships given her Emmy-nominated turn in The White Lotus came only last year.

The short comedy series from HBO is set around the multiple uber-rich guests who visit a Hawaiian resort with the intention of having a relaxing vacation. But this holiday soon turns into a mess of an adventure with family secrets coming out in the open. Britton plays Nicole, a top-shot executive of a search engine company who uses the vacation to reflect upon her relationship with her husband and children. In both projects, Britton plays a mother trying to navigate complicated relationships with her children.

Justine Lupe - Succession (2018-)

Willa standing with Connor in Succession

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Succession actress Justine Lupe joins the cast of Luckiest Girl Alive, playing Ani's wealthy best friend who might be a little cut-off from the real world but still cares deeply for Ani.

In the world of Succession, which is equally full of wealthy people committing heinous acts, Lupe mostly appeared in the first two seasons playing Willa Ferreyra, the escort and girlfriend of Connor Roy. The eldest and probably the most foolish of the Roy siblings, Connor harbors his own strange dreams (one of which includes becoming the American President) while his two brothers and sister keep on waging war against each other to gain control of their father's multi-billion dollar business empire. Thrown in the mix is Willa who is also an aspiring actress but seems to be burdened by Connor's eccentric mannerisms. Her sarcastic interactions with Connor make for some of the most hilarious moments of Succession.

Thomas Barbusca - Big Time Adolescence (2019)

Thomas Barbusca looking sideways in Big Time Adolescence Cropped

The rebellious teenager and Ani's friend Arthur is played by Thomas Barbusca for whom the classroom is a familiar screen territory given his experience in coming-of-age comedies like Middle School: The Worst Days of My Life and Big Time Adolescence.

The Pete Davidson-starrer Big Time Adolescence finds the comedian playing an immature version of himself as an adult slacker who strikes an unlikely friendship with a 16-year-old high-schooler. However, this bond turns into a self-destructive experience as both get their taste of life lessons along the way. Thomas Barbusca plays Stacey, a fellow sophomore-year student, who is very much intrigued with the concept of partying with seniors to increase his social status in the class.

Jennifer Beals on the poster for Flashdance

Having recently appeared in The Book of Bobba Fett, Jennifer Beals stars as Ani's boss who takes a liking to her and even offers an important promotion.

Acquiring mainstream fame as a cast member on The L World, Beals also broke out with her lead role in Flashdance. The popular 1980s cult favorite finds her playing Alex, a steel welder who practices dancing in the steel mill passionately every day, hoping to become a top-class ballerina one day. Apart from the lead chemistry between Jennifer Beals and Michael Nouri, the movie became a cult classic due to its highly influential soundtrack that is filled with classics like "What A Feeling" and "Maniac".

Alex Barone looking at someone in Dopesick

Alex Barone's character Dean Barton has his own dark secrets. Even though he is celebrated as an advocate for gun control, Ani's former classmate is not the saintly figure that he portrays himself to be.

The How I Met Your Father actor had a brief role in last year's medical thriller miniseries Dopesick which focused on America's opioid crisis. A far cry from his clean-shaven look in Luckiest Girl Alive, Barone sports a rugged, long-haired appearance as Tucker Smith, one of Dr. Samuel Finnix's patients. The protagonist of the series, Michael Keaton plays the doctor who in his quest to save people with opioids becomes an addict himself.

Dalmar Abuzeid - Anne With An E (2017-2019)

Stream On Netflix

Sebastian looking upwards and smiling in Anne With An E

A brief yet crucial character to the narrative of Luckiest Girl Alive is Dalmar Abuzeid's Aaron, a documentary filmmaker who unconsciously triggers Ani's high-school memories that she had suppressed for a long time.

Starting out with the Canadian teen series Degrassi: The Next Generation, Abuzeid's recent tryst with Netflix came in the form of Anne With An E, a series adapting the classic children's novel Anne of Green Gables. A far cry from the lavish New York portrayed in Luckiest Girl Alive, the slice-of-life story is set on an island in the 19th century as the orphan Anne explores the outside world. Straying away from the source material, Abuzeid's Sebastian Lacroix is an original character, a hedge trimmer who befriends Anne's love interest Gilbert.
