Tom Ellis, star of Netflix's Lucifer, has signed on for a possible season 6 of the popular devil drama. Lucifer has kept fans on edge as far as renewals and cancellations throughout its run. The series started out on Fox in 2016, where it aired its first three seasons. Following its cancellation, Lucifer moved to Netflix, where it's already aired one 10-episode season. The streamer announced that its upcoming fifth season would be its last, but fans were quick to express their disappointment. This led to news last month that Netflix was considering extending Lucifer beyond season 5.

The expected final season was originally going to be 10 episodes, just like season 4. However, Netflix ordered six additional Lucifer episodes over the summer, bringing the total to 16. Fans are still mostly in the dark about what season 5 may be like. However, the series did cast 24 star Dennis Haysbert as God. The move is a long time coming, as Lucifer has a direct connection to God, despite never being seen onscreen. The season 4 finale saw Lucifer return to Hell, which will likely have a major impact on what happens in season 5.

News of Ellis' season 6 deal comes via TVLine. It was considered to be the last road block in the way of Netflix bringing Lucifer back for another season. This is only logical, as it wouldn't make sense for the streamer to renew the series minus its title character. The majority of the show's other actors are on board for season 6. The same is true of its showrunners, who re-upped their deals last week. This means the whole team will be back for Lucifer's sixth season, if Netflix decides for sure to renew. If that does happen, fans likely wouldn't see season 6 until at least next year, as season 5 still needs an air date.

John Constantine Matt Ryan and Lucifer Tom Ellis

Prior to news of a possible season 6, Lucifer made headlines a couple months ago after appearing in The CW's Crisis on Infinite Earths event. The Arrowverse crossover not only united characters from six different shows on the network, it also featured cameos by others like Ellis. After being spotted on set, the Lucifer star tried to lie about his appearance in a scene with Legends of Tomorrow's John Constantine. However, their brief interaction was still a crossover highlight, despite some fans suspecting it was coming.

Though Ellis signing a new deal for Lucifer season 6 isn't a guarantee Netflix will order one, it certainly makes it a more likely possibility. If a new season is ordered, it will be interesting to see how season 5 ends. It seems likely that it will tie up many lose ends, as a season 6 renewal would come late in production, if not after filming is already complete. This may make Lucifer season 6 feel like a bonus, rather than necessary to completing the show's story. Either way, fans should be happy to spend more time with Lucifer, if a season 6 does come to fruition.
