Lucifer has officially completed production on season 5 and begun filming season 6. The onetime Fox drama has found great success in moving to Netflix ahead of season 4, a move that occurred just last year. When Netflix first picked up Lucifer, it was only through season 5, but fans were delighted by the surprise reveal earlier this year that the devilish series would get a sixth. The first half of Lucifer season 5 premiered on Netflix in August, and fans have been eagerly awaiting any news on when they can expect the remaining eight episodes, particularly since the series left off with the arrival of a major, never-before-seen character.

However, progress has been slowed by the coronavirus pandemic. Production on Lucifer season 5 was shut down with only 60% of the finale to go, per star Tom Ellis. For a while it remained unclear as to when Lucifer would be able to resume work, but then reports surfaced in early September saying the series would begin by the end of the month. With the season already 95% completed, the plan was for Lucifer to wrap up the second part of season 5 before jumping right into the sixth.

Now it's clear that plan has held firm. Joe Henderson, one of Lucifer's showrunners, shared the exciting news that today marks the first day of filming for season 6. "So happy we've finished up season 5," Henderson wrote, "and we will be working our buns off to get it finished and to Netflix!Lucifer likely wrapped up its season 5 finale within the past few weeks, and, presumably with its COVID protections holding firm, was able to proceed straight forward to the next.

Now that Lucifer season 5, part 2 has finally finished filming, it can move into the post-production stage. Provided there are no complications, it could possibly premiere on Netflix within the first half of 2021, which would surely be seen as fans' best case scenario. As for season 6, its premiere depends on how long Netflix will choose to space out the two installments. Since season 6 will be Lucifer's last, Netflix will likely wish to make a proper event out of it, so fans might still have to wait until 2022.

Nevertheless, this news is a promising sign that Lucifer won't suffer any further delays for its remaining sixteen episodes. That the show even got a sixth season at all is particularly exciting, since many thought it would come to an end long before that. Luckily, however, fans will get a proper conclusion for the Devil and his friends, and hopefully it'll be a satisfying one. Should everything continue to go to plan, fans could get the back half of Lucifer season 5 much sooner than they expected.
