Lucifer star Tom Ellis reveals which other characters he’d like to play. Premiering in 2016 and based on the DC Comics character created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth, and Mike Dringenberg, the series follows Lucifer Morningstar (Ellis). Making the decision to abandon hell in favor of living in Los Angeles, Morningstar opens his own nightclub, and eventually serves as a consultant for the LAPD. The show has grown over the course of five seasons, building on positive buzz and finding a new home on Netflix after being canceled by FOX.

Expanding its focus as it progressed, Lucifer has devoted many of its episodes to examining the supporting cast. The show also stars Lauren German as Detective Chloe Decker, Morningstar’s partner in the LAPD and potential love interest. Kevin Alejandro appears as Detective Daniel Espinoza, Chloe’s ex-husband and the father of her daughter Trixie. D.B. Woodside and Lesley-Ann Brandt play an angel and a demon, respectively. Rachael Harris rounded out the initial cast as Morningstar’s therapist, Linda, while Aimee Garcia joined in season 2 as forensic scientist Ella Lopez. Heading into season 6 of Lucifer, slated to be the show’s last, Ellis has opened up about which other characters he’s thought of portraying.

During a recent Comic-Con@Home panel, Ellis was asked about which other characters he’d want to play if he wasn’t already playing the titular devil. Starting off his response with a joke, the actor ultimately decided on the two characters that Lucifer knows quite well. You can read Ellis’ quote below:

“Trixie. Trixie. Yeah, exactly. If she was a hooker. I probably—I would have had a lot of fun probably playing DB’s character, Amenadiel. But I think also Maze, just because of all the stuff you get to do.”

Amenadiel works as a detective on Lucifer

Ellis agreed that Maze’s scenes looked to be the most fun to play, considering that the character is frequently on the winning side of knife fights. But, on the whole, picking from Lucifer’s ensemble cast, the actor chose two characters with trajectories that align closely with Morningstar’s. At the start of the show, for example, Maze begins from a position of being deeply distrustful of humans and wanting to return to the world that she knows. In a similar way, Amenadiel was first introduced to audiences through his attempts to force his devilish brother to go back to Hell. But gradually, he’s come to understand that Los Angeles can be a charming and complicated place. While it’s true that Ellis’ started off with a kinder view of humanity than either Amenadiel or Maze, much of Lucifer has been about the protagonist’s slow and not always guaranteed growth and maturity.

Though it certainly would have been funny to see Ellis embodying Amenadiel’s self-seriousness or Maze’s mischievousness, it’s clear that the right performers were chosen for their respective roles. Part of the reason why Lucifer has endured, even enjoying a relatively lengthy run on Netflix, where most series only last for a few seasons, is because fans continue to tune in for the chemistry that the cast has established. The actors have built up a rapport and a rhythm that has helped to infuse the series with humor and heart. As the final season is set to premiere in September, there are still several more episodes for those fans to enjoy.
