Lucifer's final season will only be eight episodes long. Lucifer premiered on Fox in early 2016 and is a live-action adaptation of the eponymous character from DC Comics. The story centers around the adventures of Lucifer Morningstar, the Devil who leaves Hell to make his home in Los Angeles, where he becomes a consultant for the Los Angeles Police Department.

While season 5 of Lucifer was announced in summer 2019 to be the show's last, executives from Netflix, which picked up the show after its initial cancellation by Fox, later decided to add a final season. As of now, Lucifer's season 5 is currently on track to resume production after being delayed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. As a result of COVID-19, Lucifer showrunners were only able to film, edit, and stitch together the first half of season 5 (known affectionately as season 5A); this means the show is currently working on season 5B. Once filming has completely wrapped for season 5, the cast and crew will immediately move to begin production on season 6.

TVLine reports that season 6 of Lucifer will only contain eight episodes. This will bring season 6's total episode count to half of that of season 5, meaning the series will clock in at 91 episodes altogether. When asked, Netflix representatives said they had no comment regarding the length of season 6.

Amenadiel and Lucifer in therapy

While the storyline for season 6 is unknown, fans can expect that it will build off of whatever will come in season 5B. Although nobody is sure what will happen in season 5B, Charlie's mortality, the relationship between God and Lucifer, and what happens next for Lucifer and Chloe are sure to be addressed. As such, it's clear there are countless possibilities for showrunners to take season 5B, not to mention season 6.

Even though Lucifer's final season will undoubtedly be a bittersweet moment for many, the fact that this show has defied the odds to rise from the dead speaks for itself. While fans are still in the dark for what's to come in both seasons 5B and 6, Lucifer's character development and imaginative storylines have created one of the most memorable shows on television today. That being said, whatever happens in the eight forthcoming episodes of season 6, viewers will undoubtedly be in for a hell of a ride.
