Lucifer EPs Break Down The Final Season

Lucifer Season 6 Episode 6

Screen Rant: I've been a fan of Lucifer since it started. It's amazing to see the journey that it's taken throughout the years. How is it for both of you, now that it's come to a close?

Joe Henderson: I'm glad the pain's over. Whoo! [Laughs] Yeah.

Ildy Modrovich: Yeah, metaphoric and literal. [Chuckles]

Joe Henderson: Honestly, being able to revisit it, being able to be on these interviews with Ildy again, it feels like the team is back together. I feel like it was both yesterday and forever ago, because we had the time of our lives. It was six seasons of a show that kept dying and coming back to life, working with the best people you've ever worked with, was amazing.

Ildy Modrovich: [Singing] "And I had the time of my life." [Chuckles] Let's do the deadlift, if we were in the same room, [Joe and I] would totally do it. I had Lucifer dreams last night, it was so funny. We were doing some press yesterday, and it makes me happy if I see anything, if I'm watching Netflix and it comes up on my suggestions, I get this rush of happiness. It really was a glorious kind of lightning in a bottle moment in, I think, my career and a lot of our careers, it was just really satisfying and fun.

You two have delivered so many iconic character development moments, action scenes, and whatnot throughout these six seasons. Is there any one moment that you are most proud of?

Joe Henderson: I got one, Lucifer protecting Chloe with the wings at the end of season 3. One, I was just happy to have that in my episode, but also it was something we'd been building towards, so the whole room was always pitching towards this beautiful, iconic moment. Then, I was with Tom on set while he was acting out the inside of the wings, and I remember, he's going through it and he's playing stoic, and I remember he's like, "What do you think," and I'm like, "Tom, show us just how much this hurts you." I watched him immediately sell that and just break my heart, I was like, "Oh my god, I feel like I'm hurting him right now." That just felt so iconic, and it felt like the kind of moment that would make it so that Fox could never cancel us, at all, no matter what. There was no way they would do it.

Ildy Modrovich: And it worked! Oh, wait. I'm a sucker for the romance, and there were so many moments in the show that I love and I'm proud of, but the ones that I personally, like, forced was the axe scene. [Laughs] I really am proud of that moment, I think it's a beautifully romantic moment between Chloe and Lucifer. There's so many, I'm gonna have to say, also, Dan figuring out that he had been duped in "Dan: Naked and Afraid," that was not mine, that was Mika Costa, but God dang it, that was satisfying.

Joe Henderson: [Laughs] Yeah.

Lucifer Season 3 Finale

Coming into any final season of a show is always going to be difficult to find a way to deliver something that's emotionally satisfying for both you and the audience. Did you find that very challenging to craft a finale that you knew would be gratifying for everybody?

Ildy Modrovich: It was a piece of cake.

Joe Henderson: We already did it once. [Laughs]

Ildy Modrovich: Right, we did it in season 5. [Laughs] No, we went back and forth so many times on different endings. We didn't have one, and then that was it, we explored a lot of different things, and we talked a lot about it in the writers room and with Tom. We knew that the way we ended was almost the only way, once we had talked everything out, it was almost the only way that we could go and be true to who the character of Lucifer was.

Joe Henderson: I think that is the trick of it is Lucifer needs to tell us where to go. When we realized that, when we really embraced that, that helped unlock a lot. It became working backwards to build towards that. To me, that's the trick of every finale is your main character, from the very beginning, is going to tell you who they are, and in the very beginning, Lucifer is someone who was mad at his dad for abandoning him, so the ending had to be him reckoning with him doing that to his own child. Like if you look back and go like, "Oh, that's an obvious parallel," but we didn't find it until season 6, because that's where the character finally told us, "Hey, dummies, this is it."

Ildy Modrovich: It's funny, also, like Lucifer, Rory also discovered the same thing that her dad did, in other words, that, "I wouldn't take away whatever pain I've gone through in my life, because it made me who I am." That's what Lucifer realized, and that he actually had a gift because of it, because he understood what it meant to be broken and he can help other broken people, souls, and Rory realized at the end, "Wait, I don't want to change who I am either, so I don't want to change anything." She had the ability to look back and have 20-20 [hindsight]. Not all of us have that, but it's a good thing to remember, as we're going through s--t in our lives that, you know what? All right. This sucks right now, but it is making me all those corny things people say, stronger, better, wiser, but it's true.

Rory in Lucifer Season 6

I couldn't agree more. Speaking of Rory, the finale sees Chloe and Lucifer reunited in Hell. But do you think that Rory also comes to visit at some point in the future? Because we don't really see her after Chloe passes.

Joe Henderson: We feel like the next scene is Rory popping in. We literally had a lot of conversations about this, because there was a version where Rory came down with, there's a version where it was Rory that actually brought her mom down. But we really wanted Amenadiel to have that moment and speak to his new position as God, and we also really wanted to separate it, so it was just Chloe and Lucifer together. But to us, like, that session finished, they walked out and Rory was like, "Alright, let's go watch More Bones."

Ildy Modrovich: Yeah, and in the language of the show, she has wings, and she's an angel, and she could fly down anytime. We knew that was hopefully clear to everybody and [left] no doubt that she would be down there.

Well, I had seen some chatter wondering, "Oh, did they all reunite as a family?" I myself was also kind of curious, I figured they did, but had to ask.

Joe Henderson: You can put it to rest. [Chuckles]

It's very much a satisfying finale to the show, but nowadays, everything finds a way to come back at some point in the future. Do you feel the door's open just enough for Lucifer to come back at some point in the future?

Joe Henderson: I mean, I hope so. We loved making the show, we loved working with these people. I think hopefully at some point, we can find a way to come back, or at least revisit or do something. It was such a great time, it's such a great experience, and we love these people, so never say never.

Ildy Modrovich: My vote is for Lucifer The Musical, personally, on Broadway. If anybody wants to hashtag that, get that going. [Chuckles]

Joe Henderson: I say Lucifer The Animated Series.

Lucifer Animated Episode

Or you blend them, Lucifer: The Animated Musical Series.

John Henderson: Oh my god, that's literally combining Ildy and I into a single idea. [Laughs]

Well there you go, it's perfect! Tom's music abilities still give me chills to this day, his rendition of "Creep," I'm like, "Man, can you just do the whole song instead of just the two-minute snippet?" I want the whole thing!

Joe Henderson: We had a beautiful moment on the finale where Tom and Brianna were just singing for the crew. One, it's amazing because Brianna was a new addition to the final season and has just an amazing voice, but two, it was almost like a way to remind ourselves of the warmth Tom brought to the cast and the crew and all that and to see them almost acting as father and daughter in front of everyone. I keep that in my memory, because just hearing him sing brings back my memories of being on the show so much.

Ildy Modrovich: Yeah, they sang "Hallelujah," and we were all standing around cry.

I can only imagine how emotional that must have been. Speaking of music, as a kid who grew up in the 2000s, I'm gonna go ahead and age myself, late '90s, early 2000s, I love the use of "Welcome to The Black Parade" for the finale song. How did the decision for that song come about?

Ildy Modrovich: [That was] all my kid. So, my offspring enjoys — well, that was really the first obsession, musical obsession. I wasn't that familiar with My Chem, because it was sort of in between my — and Clover, by the way, my kid has no ties to that time, did not grow up in the 2000s, but man, it became a thing, we listened to every single song, I read all the Gerard Way comic books. I was equally obsessed, we're going to the concert, by the way, that's been postponed like two years running, excited about that. So anyway, the minute I heard that song, I was like, "That's Lucifer's song." I always wanted to squish it into this show somewhere, and when we got it for the end, I was so excited.

Now, were there other ideas thrown out as well for a potential final song, or was it always going to be "Welcome to The Black Parade"?

Joe Henderson: I had a lot of Dave Matthews pitches, but Ildy kept nixing them, which is hurtful. It's hurtful.

Ildy Modrovich: Sympathy for the Devil, I think, was one that was thrown out. There were some others.

Joe Henderson: But I feel like that was the only one that I ever watched. I feel like once it locked in there, it was like, "Oh, this is it."

Lucifer and Rory music scene

Coming into the final season, there was obviously the Lucifer solo comic book series, which had its own ending. I have noticed a lot of elements have made their way into the show, like alternate universes, God disappearing, things like that. Did you look to the comics for elements for the final season?

Joe Henderson: I was a huge fan of Mike Carey's run, I was obsessed, so yeah, we devoured that. I, in, particular was obsessed with everything he did. I think the challenge was that the comics are such an incredibly huge tapestry, what we would try to do is just, "Okay, here's this amazing idea, what is the version of it that lives in our grounded world?" There were bounties we had out on big ideas, like, "How do we bring them in?" The idea that Mom's world is filled with centaurs was a nod to the comics, all of that stuff. I tried to get Gaudium in, I chased it, I got his name referenced in a file cabinet at one point and I was like, "Good, that's gonna hold me to get him in there," and we just could never figure out how to do it justice. Because all these big crazy ideas are awesome in a comic or in a world that isn't our grounded world, but we always wanted to make sure if we were going to do them, we do them right. But, centaurs was, I'm really happy we got that in there. [Laughs]

Ildy Modrovich: That'll be part of the animated series, fosho.

Joe Henderson: There it is!
