Netflix has officially unveiled the first trailer for Lucifer season 5, and it introduces fans to a brand new, if somewhat familiar character: Lucifer's (Tom Ellis) twin brother. Lucifer first debuted on Fox in 2016, but after three seasons was canceled. However, fans were quick to campaign for additional episodes, and Netflix later picked up the series for two more seasons. The original plan was to have Lucifer end with season 5, but following Ellis and showrunners Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich signing new deals with Netflix, Lucifer ended up getting renewed for a sixth (and truly final) season.

The season 6 announcement came one day after Lucifer's season 5 premiere date was revealed. The first batch of episodes for season 5 will drop on Netflix on August 21, with the second part likely arriving sometime in 2021. Fans have been waiting since May 2019 for Lucifer season 5, which will pick up from season 4's devastating ending. After several episodes of personal growth, Lucifer made the difficult decision to return to Hell in order to keep the demons that reside there in line. However, this came just after Chloe (Lauren German) finally declared her love for him, leaving both her and fans absolutely heartbroken.

Now, a little less than a month after Netflix first shared the Lucifer season 5 premiere date, the streamer has unveiled the first trailer. Not only does it show how Chloe and the others are coping with Lucifer's departure, it also shows his return. Or does it? You can check it out below.

The Lucifer season 5 trailer throws an excellent twist at fans with the surprise that it isn't Lucifer that returns to the mortal world at first, but his twin brother Michael. At first it merely seems like the time away has altered Lucifer's personality (as Michael claims time works differently in Hell), but the aftermath of a fight with Maze (Lesley-Ann Brandt) reveals the truth. Michael has arrived, and he's ready to take over Lucifer's life.

All of this sets up a pretty intriguing season 5, especially because fans haven't met Michael yet. It's clear his arrival is going to complicate several matters, including Lucifer's relationship with Chloe. Of course, the real Lucifer will return eventually, though it remains to be seen exactly how long that will take. Still, Lucifer looks to have a thrilling season ahead, and fans are likely even more excited than they were before. Lucifer is getting a major shake-up in season 5; good thing it's only a little over a month away.
