Almost a year since the series came to an end, Lucifer showrunners Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich hope to do a revival of the DC/Vertigo TV show in the future. One comic book show that had a wild ride during its run was Lucifer, starring Tom Ellis as the Devil. Loosely based on Neil Gaiman's The Sandman character, the live-action series followed Lucifer consulting with the LAPD after he lost interest in running Hell. While airing its first three seasons on broadcast television, Fox officially canceled Lucifer in May 2018, but thanks to an ambitious social media campaign, Netflix swooped in to save the series.

Like many successful Netflix dramas, Lucifer became one of the streaming platform's strongest performers. This led to a season 5 renewal, which was initially going to be the show's last. However, Netflix and Warner Bros. TV came to an arrangement that allowed Lucifer to be renewed for season 6. Not only did the move to Netflix allow the series to run for three additional years, the writers were also able to go even further into the celestial and fantastical elements of the mythology, especially in Lucifer season 6.

As of this week, the Lucifer season 6 Blu-ray/DVD set officially became available for purchase, and to promote the home release, Screen Rant interviewed showrunners Henderson and Modrovich. While Lucifer season 6 had a definitive ending for the characters, the two executive producers aren't against the idea of doing a revival in the future. They say:

Joe: I mean, I hope so. We loved making the show, we loved working with these people. I think hopefully at some point, we can find a way to come back, or at least revisit or do something. It was such a great time, it's such a great experience, and we love these people, so never say never.

Ildy: My vote is for Lucifer The Musical, personally, on Broadway. If anybody wants to hashtag that, get that going. [Chuckles]

Joe: I say Lucifer The Animated Series.

Lucifer Animated Episode

The idea of bringing Lucifer back in an animated format would already tie back to one of the earlier episodes from the final season. In Lucifer season 6, episode 3, "Yabba Dabba Do Me," portions of the story were done in animation when Chloe Decker and Lucifer entered Jimmy Barnes' Hell loop. The animators behind HBO Max's Harley Quinn worked on that episode, hence the similar animation style. While a live-action revival may be trickier to pull off, bringing Lucifer back in a different format would be easier, especially for the actors, who would only have to lend their voices to their respective characters.

Whether it would be in live-action, animation, or even as a musical, it wouldn't be shocking if Lucifer made a comeback at some point. In the current age of nostalgia, studios and networks are doing countless revivals every year. If the creative team comes up with the right story, Lucifer could easily be resurrected, especially as a limited event series. Even if his show doesn't come back, Ellis' Lucifer could always appear in other DC media, similar to his Crisis on Infinite Earths cameo. Time will tell if Lucifer ever comes back to the small screen, but even if it doesn't happen, fans can relive the entire series on Netflix, Blu-ray, and DVD.
