Warning: SPOILERS for Lucifer's Series Finale - "Partners 'Til The End".

Lucifer season 6 ended Netflix's hit series but did the Devil and his friends and family get the endings they deserved? Lucifer season 6 picked up a month after season 5's cliffhanger ending when Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis) won a war against his evil twin brother and season 5 villain Michael for the right to become the new God. However, in typical Lucifer fashion, events didn't turn out the way fans thought so that the Devil concluded the series with a very different destiny.

Lucifer season 5 was originally supposed to be the final season before Netflix greenlit the supernatural procedural for a 10-episode 6th and final season. Lucifer season 5 was then super-sized to 16 episodes that Netflix broke up into two halves. Some of the plans to close out Lucifer still happened, such as the death of Dan Espinoza (Kevin Alejandro) and the coming of God (Dennis Haysbert) to Earth in mortal form. But with ten more hours to play with, Lucifer was blessed with the time to explore the characters further as well as introduce a brand new character as part of Lucifer's main season 6 storyline, Rory Morningstar (Brianna Hildebrand), the time-traveling daughter of the Devil and Chloe Decker (Lauren German).

Lucifer's series finale, "Partners 'Til The End," was a poignant hour that pulls at fans' heartstrings as the Devil, Rory, and Chloe solved the season-long mystery of why Lucifer vanishes from their lives before Rory was born. The answer came from Lucifer's actions throughout season 6 where, in his quest to understand his duties as God (which he stalled all-season from becoming), the Devil inadvertently helped several damned souls achieve redemption. Lucifer realized his true calling isn't to become God, a job he didn't actually want, but to return to Hell and redeem the damned stuck in Hell loops. Hence, Lucifer returns to Hell for good so he isn't around when Rory grows up, which leads her confronting her father, creating a predestination paradox. Of course, Lucifer's actions in season 6 had a domino effect on all of his friends and family. Every main character in Lucifer's cast has become a fan favorite and the conclusion of their character arcs is just as important as Chloe and the Devil's. Happily, Lucifer season 6 found satisfying and resonant ways to give all of the main characters their just due - although it's possible that Lucifer Morningstar may ultimately regret the choice he made for himself.

Lucifer Morningstar Is Now Hell's Healer And Therapist

Lucifer Therapist

Lucifer returned to Hell to become the underworld's therapist. Essentially, the Devil became Dr. Linda Martin, right down to duplicating the office in Hell that Lucifer spent so much time in pouring his heart and problems out to Linda. Lucifer's noble goal is to help every damned soul escape their Hell loops, as outlined by season 5's rules, the way Dan and "Mr. Said Out Bitch" (Jeremiah Birkett) were able to absolve themselves of their guilt and enter Heaven. However, with possibly billions of souls to help - including Michael, who was damned to Hell by the Devil at the end of Lucifer season 5 - Lucifer could potentially spend millions of years as Hell's therapist. This means that Chloe will too since she joined him in Hell as his partner after she died.

Lucifer season 6 played sleight-of-hand with its biggest plot hole: the Devil could do all of that good in Hell and infinitely more throughout the universe if he'd simply ascended to Heaven and became God. With omnipotence and omniscience, Lucifer would have known why he left Rory and helped everyone in Hell and on Earth. The reasons why Lucifer didn't become God - besides the real-world rationale of how it would completely change the series in its final season - are rooted in the Devil's personality since Lucifer didn't truly want to be God, deep down.

But while Lucifer's ending perfectly suits the series' thesis that "If the Devil can be redeemed, then anyone can," spending eternity in Hell (again) meeting one-on-one with the damned seems like a worse job than being God. Further, Lucifer banished himself, in part, to protect the timeline and Rory, but time moves strangely in Hell (and in Lucifer) so presumably, the Devil still could go back to Earth after Rory returned to her proper timeline if he (and when) he gets bored with being Hell's therapist.

Chloe Became Lucifer's Partner In Hell After Living A Meaningful Life

Chloe Decker's love was always tied to Lucifer, as well as her destiny; after all, she was literally created as a divine 'gift' for the Devil by God to be his partner in love and life. As such, Chloe abided by Lucifer's bargain not to reveal to Rory where her father went as she grew up, to protect the timeline and predestination paradox Rory created by traveling back in time. Decker gave up being an LAPD homicide detective in Lucifer season 5 to help Lucifer when he becomes God, but Chloe ultimately went back to being a cop, as well as a mother to Rory and to Trixie (Scarlett Estevez). Chloe died decades later with Rory at her bedside after living an important and impactful life.

Of course, Chloe went to Heaven, just as she did when Michael killed her in Lucifer's season 5 ending. But Decker also has the unique gift of being a dear friend of the new God, Amenadiel (D.B. Woodside) who knew that Heaven isn't where she wants to be. Chloe chose to join Lucifer in Hell and be his 'partner 'til the end,' because, for the detective, 'home' is wherever Lucifer is. It's a fitting ending for Chloe Decker, but what happens if (and when) Lucifer gets bored, frustrated, or distracted in Hell and wants to return to Los Angeles? Would he leave Chloe behind or could she follow him to Earth as a ghost, like Dan was in Lucifer season 6? These are questions that may never be answered.

Amenadiel Is Now Amenagod And Set Up Shop On Earth

Amenagod

Among the options of Lucifer's cast to become God, Amenadiel is the better choice. "Amenagod" has something even Lucifer lacks; a genuine affection for humanity. In fact, Amenadiel rejected God's offer to succeed Him in Lucifer season 5 because he wanted to stay on Earth, raise his baby son Charlie with Dr. Linda Martin, and become a police officer to honor Dan Espinoza, who sponsored Amenadiel's application to the LAPD. It's Amenadiel's connection to humanity that led him to be a very different God, one who lives among humans instead of out of reach in Heaven. This also allows Amenagod to stay in touch with his friends and family. It's perhaps because of Amenagod that Lucifer's season finale flash-forwards showed life turned out as it should (and well) for all of his friends and family.

Meanwhile, Amenagod seemed genuinely shocked when Charlie showed angel powers and wings, so Amenadiel may be allowing himself the ability to be surprised like a normal human. Lucifer season 6's finale didn't specify how, when, or even if Linda found out Amenadiel became God. Nor is it clear if Linda ever published her tell-all memoir, "Sympathy for the Devil: My Life With Lucifer Morningstar." But Dr. Martin got validation from Lucifer himself he regards her affectionately as the best of therapists and one of his closest friends. All in all, Amenadiel, Linda, and Charlie got the best endings fans could have hoped for, and Lucifer's universe is fortunate to have Amenadiel as God.

Ella Lopez Has Her Own STEM Foundation, Thanks To Lucifer

Ella Lopez (Aimee Garcia) ended Lucifer continuing her best destiny as the LAPD's top forensic scientist and, thanks to Lucifer donating millions in her honor, she also runs the Miss Lopez STEM Initiative to encourage other young women to pursue math and science. Ella was the last of Lucifer's inner circle to learn the truth that he's the Devil and she was understandably hurt by her friends deceiving her. But Miss Lopez also correctly deduced the world was on the verge of ending because God was missing from Heaven, which provoked Amenadiel to act and become God to save the world. After her predilection for bad boys led her to date a serial killer in Lucifer season 5, Miss Lopez ended the series with a genuinely good boyfriend, Detective Carol Corbett (Scott Porter). All in all, Ella, who deserves the world, got a wonderful and fitting ending in Lucifer.

Mazikeen And Eve Are Married Bounty Hunters

Eve Maze Lucifer season 6

Mazikeen (Lesley-Ann Brandt) grew a soul and realized she didn't want to be Maziqueen of Hell while Eve (Inbar Lavi) stood up for herself against her ex-husband Adam (Scott MacArthur). Maze and Eve not only worked out their issues but they had an emotional and beautiful wedding ceremony, which was one of the highlights of Lucifer season 6. Maze and Eve are Lucifer's most surprising pair of star-crossed lovers but they ideally ended the series as married bounty hunters in love.

Dan Espinoza Went To Heaven And Reunited With Charlotte Richards

Dan and Charlotte are reunited in Heaven in Lucifer

Dan Espinoza uniquely suffered unlike anyone else in Lucifer but his ending couldn't be more perfect. Michael manipulated Dan into shooting Lucifer in Lucifer season 5, which led the Devil to pull an incredibly complex prank on Dan that foreshadowed his shocking murder. Dan ended up on Hell in Lucifer season 6 and, after returning to Los Angeles as a ghost, Dan's arc was to face the true source of his guilt: abandoning Trixie and leaving her without a father. But Ghost Dan was able to have one last talk with Trixie and say goodbye to his baby girl, absolving him of his guilt. Dan's beautiful reward was ascending into Heaven where he was reunited with his true love, Charlotte Richards (Tricia Helfer).

Rory Returned To The Future But Knows Why Lucifer Left Her

Rory says goodbye to her parents in the Lucifer series finale.

Lucifer's prodigal child Rory also got the ending she really hoped for in season 6. Lucifer was ultimately able to prove he loves her and formed a relationship with Rory. The Devil also helped Rory find her better self and stopped her from killing Le Mec, an act of darkness she would have lived to regret and given Rory her own Devil face, like Lucifer's. With the mystery of why Lucifer vanished solved, Rory was able to go back to the future say goodbye to Chloe on her death bed, which was the catharsis she deserved. What happens next to Rory Morningstar after Lucifer season 6 is unwritten but she is a half-angel and a celestial being so, at the very least, Rory could visit her parents in Hell whenever she wants. But overall, Lucifer's main cast of characters got what they truly desired.
