Pixar’s Luca poster teases an underwater transformation movie. The upcoming animated film centers around a boy named Luca from a small town on the Italian Riviera, who meets a new friend named Alberto. Unbeknownst to Luca, Alberto is guarding an enormous secret — that he’s actually a monster from an undersea world in disguise.

The Luca teaser poster on Pixar’s Twitter page hints at a pivotal underwater transformation for the children. The picture is simple and symbolic with a young child literally floating between 2 worlds. Half “head in the clouds”, half immersed in the ocean depths, the boy's body carries with it the form of a sea creature, still yet to be fully revealed by Pixar. You can see the tweet below:

A key point to note is that even though Alberto is slated to be the disguised sea monster, the boy transforming in the poster image is Luca. This suggests that Luca, at some point in the film, will gain the opportunity to become a sea creature like Alberto, and explore his best friend’s underwater world. With some shades of Disney’s classic The Little Mermaid, Pixar boasts a solid track record of ocean based epics with their own deep-sea modern classic, Finding Nemo.

Luca's synopsis reads as follows: Set in a beautiful seaside town on the Italian Riviera, the original animated feature is a coming-of-age story about one young boy experiencing an unforgettable summer filled with gelato, pasta and endless scooter rides. Luca shares these adventures with his newfound best friend, but all the fun is threatened by a deeply-held secret: he is a sea monster from another world just below the water’s surface.
