Luca is Pixar's coming-of-age sea monster story, set on the Italian Riviera for one incredible summer for Luca and Alberto, played by Jacob Tremblay and Jack Dylan Grazer. The story follows the two boys/sea monsters and their human friend Giulia, as they struggle through all the things nearly teenagers go through: winning races, triumphing over bullies, disobeying your parents, and hiding the fact that you're really a scaly monster from the deep.

Luca, Alberto, and Giulia form a fast friendship through some rocky stages but have a thrilling adventure along the way, all in stunning surrounds in the Cinque Terre which are filled with interesting characters and the wildest dreams.

What appealed to both of you about the story of Luca?

Jacob Tremblay: Okay. I think it was the whole friendship aspect. I think it's so awesome to be part of a movie about such a special thing for a lot of people.

Jack Dylan Grazer: I agree completely. I think that the script was really compelling, Enrico (Casarosa) is a great director and he was so nice from the get-go. When I first met him, he was great. I was excited about delving into this Italian culture.

What appealed most to you about Italian culture?

Jack Dylan Grazer: The food. When I first got the call to meet with Enrico, I had come like two months before that from Italy. I was there for six and a half months. It was pretty synchronistic that this came forward.

What did you like most about your characters? What drew you to Alberto and Luca?

Jacob Tremblay: I loved his character design. I thought they looked so cool, and so cute. It's such a cute art style too, but I mean, I love Luca and Alberto's eagerness to go explore the world.

Jack Dylan Grazer: Yeah, I agree. I really assimilated with that, with always wanting to extend the bounds and go outside of your comfort zone and also explore more of yourself. That's kind of who I am as well. I relate to Alberto as well.

Luca and Alberto, as sea monsters, peek out of the water in Luca.

They're both very different characters. Do you kind of see that difference between the two of you as actors?

Jacob Tremblay: It's cool how they're very different. I guess the dynamic is really good. 'Cause in real life, I feel like when you see two best friends and it's always so random, like one's super tall, the other's super short. I remember my best friend was like way above me.

You guys had to do a lot of your voice recording from home. How did you find doing that?

Jacob Tremblay: I was very lucky and I was able to record maybe like a quarter of it at the Pixar studio, but then when COVID hit, I was able to go to a studio in Vancouver.

Jacob Tremblay: I had to do it all in my mother's closet. But it was a cool experience. I'd never seen so much my mom's closet before.

Was it challenging to channel the character in such a random place as that?

Jack Dylan Grazer: To be honest with you, there's not much channeling in this. This kind of stuff is easy – I'm not watering it down and saying it's nothing, I'm just saying it's fun. It's so much fun. I didn't even have to memorize my lines, it's that fun. It was such a great experience and such a great learning experience. I love doing new things and extending my capabilities as an actor. It's really fun

Have you guys had the chance to meet in person?

Jacob and Jack: No.

It's pretty incredible the way you were able to build a rapport between the two of you. It feels like Luca and Alberto are best friends. Did you guys have video chats to get into the character or connect?

Jacob Tremblay: This is technically the third time when me and Jack have seen each other. We've just known each other through Zoom. And DM on Instagram. It's pretty crazy. Enrico did such an amazing job and when you watch the movie, our chemistry is so amazing. Even if we didn't work with each other.

Alberto gives a thumbs up to Luca after finishing the Vespa

I guess that's a symptom of a good script. And how did you interact with the other cast? You all did your bit separately and it meshed together in production?

Jacob Tremblay: Yeah, it's quite unfortunate because this is such an amazing cast that we won't be able to meet everyone else who worked on the film. I never, unfortunately never got to work with them.

Jack Dylan Grazer: Like Jacob said, it's such a cool cast. I would have loved to get in a room with Jacob and Maya Rudolph. That'd be sick.

Hopefully there'll be some kind of event down the road where you guys can all connect and chat through your experience. How did voicing a Pixar character go in comparison to acting on screen?

Jack Dylan Grazer: It's both form of storytelling and a character that I love. The obvious difference is I'm not on camera, I don't have be be as visual, but something I did take away is that when my character jumps I'll jump and when he was punched the stomach, I'll be like, 'Ooh!' Like, I'll do that [mimes punching himself in the stomach] because it helps. But you know I'm in a studio and it's just my voice they're using.

Jacob Tremblay: It's pretty much the same [for me as] for him. You have to do a lot with your voice and it really helps when you're able to move around and be an open space.

A lot of people's dream projects would be working on a Pixar film. So what would you guys say would be your next dream project if could do anything?

Jacob Tremblay: My dream project would probably be in a new Indiana Jones.

Jack Dylan Grazer: Shut the–! Dude! No way you just said that, you literally stole my answer. I was going to say, I want to be Indiana Jones.

Jacob: It is a perfect answer.

Jack Dylan Grazer: It is a perfect answer! I've been saying this for years. I want to be Indiana Jones.

Jacob Tremblay: There you go, we're both playing Indiana Jones.

Jacob, I wanted to ask if you started working on The Little Mermaid yet?

Jacob Tremblay: Yeah, I actually have. I shot it before COVID. Everyone on the project is so nice. It's such a fun environment to be in and like this, like Pixar, it's such a big part of my childhood too, The Little Mermaid. I have two sisters so, you know, they'd always put it on the TV.

Jack, what's your next project?

Jack Dylan Grazer: I've got a few things down the pipe but right now I'm in Atlanta shooting Shazam 2. That's exciting and super fun. It's so funny. And it's really action packed.

So you're already in a superhero movie, Jack. Jacob, would you want to be in a superhero movie, maybe with your ex-co-star Brie Larson?

Jacob Tremblay: That's the dream, especially like any kid wants to be a superhero too. That's the dream because – similar to Pixar, you know. I looked up to Pixar characters when I was even younger than I am now. And kids do the same kind of thing now.
