Lovecraft Country showrunner Misha Green has teased more of what was planned for the canceled second season, including a setting completely overrun by zombies. Lovecraft Country is a horror drama set in 1950s Jim Crow-era America starring Jonathan Majors and Jurnee Smollett. The series, which premiered in August 2020 on HBO, was praised for its unique combination of Lovecraftian horrors with the real-life horrors of the racism experienced by Black communities in the United States. Plans for a second season were in development, but despite the show’s success, HBO recently announced that it had been canceled.

Now, as Lovecraft Country’s creator, Green has shared more details about the now-canceled second season. Green originally shared a taste of the [Lovecraft Country] Season 2 Bible” on Twitter, posting an image which was labeled the “sovereign states of America” and depicted a map of the US divided into four sections. One of those sections was the “Whitelands”, which Green has now shared more information about, clarifying that it would have been a territory “completely overrun by zombies," mostly slow but with “pockets of fast-moving zombies too.” See the full Tweet below:

These teasers of what the second season of Lovecraft Country could have included show that the series had great potential, making the cancellation decision by HBO even more disappointing. It seems to have been far into development, with Smollett and Majors even reportedly clearing their schedules to return to the show. The introduction of zombies into Lovecraft Country would have allowed the series to pay homage to more classic horror stories, such as George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead. The unexpected cancellation of Lovecraft Country may sting - but by sharing these teasers of what could have been, Green is allowing fans to imagine the expanded world of the show for themselves.
