When fans first heard about Love in Paradise: The Caribbean they were excited about the tropical-themed 90 Day Fiancé spin-off, but after watching it, viewers feel gross. The spin-off follows Americans who have fallen in love with individuals from the Caribbean islands, and it turns out fans aren’t as keen on the idea as the network hoped. Although some viewers have warmed to the summer spin-off, there are many others who have major issues with the new series and are unlikely to continue watching.

Love in Paradise: The Caribbean follows four couples who are trying to make their relationships work despite the distance between them. Many of the Love in Paradise couples are at the beginning of the K-1 visa process but have encountered roadblocks due to COVID-19. Most of the couples met while the American partner was on vacation and for various reasons—including pregnancy—they decided to continue the relationship after the vacation was over.

The spin-off is meant to be a fun summer series, but fans on Reddit called the show “icky,” and feel uncomfortable with the “predatory” behavior the Americans exhibited. Fans said the show was “100% GROSS and seems to trivialize, exploit, and normalize sex tourism. It’s f****** disgusting.”  They took issue with the way the American cast members seemed to sometimes fetishize their islander partners. Fans also noted that some members of the cast engaged in risky behavior, like having unprotected sex with a swinger’s resort employee.

For a number of reasons, there are a lot of fans who have major issues with the show, and it’s causing them to reach for the remote. “I hate it,” a fan commented. “Watched part of episode 1 and gave up.” There were several commenters who also had trouble finishing the first episode, and it made many long for the early seasons of 90 Day Fiancé. Many fans have accused the franchise of jumping the shark, and are disappointed with most of the spin-offs.

Love in Paradise: The Caribbean will no doubt have its supporters, but for a lot of viewers, it’s just another failed addition to the franchise. However, the series has only aired a few episodes and it could still win back viewers as the show unfolds. Still, TLC may want to consider other, more creative ideas for spin-offs that don’t rehash old storylines fans have seen many times before.
