The first trailer for Paramount's Love and Monsters sees Dylan O'Brien take on the Monsterpocalypse to find his high school love. O'Brien plays Joel Dawson, a young man who loses just about everything when a monster uprising wrecks havoc on the world. Seven years later, Joel lives with a group of survivors underground until the day he makes contact with his former girlfriend Aimee (Jessica Henwick). Despite her being in a human colony over 80 miles away across monster-infested land, Joel sets out to reunite with Aimee. Love and Monsters also stars Michael Rooker and Ariana Greenblatt.

Love and Monsters has suffered a few delays on its way to release. The film was first scheduled for release in March of this year, but Paramount later shifted it to April. The coronavirus pandemic soon proved to be the ultimate challenge for 2020 movies, resulting in the delay of countless projects. Love and Monsters was one of them, initially getting bumped to February 2021. Then, just last month, Paramount made the decision to bring Love and Monsters back to 2020, but through forgoing a theatrical run. Like many other movies this year, Love and Monsters will be released on VOD on Ocotber 16.

A month ahead of Love and Monster's on-demand debut, Paramount has released the first trailer for the film. The roughly two-and-a-half minute trailer shows plenty of love between Joel and Aimee, though it feels a little light on monsters. One plus though: Joel finds a sweet dog on his journey. Check it out down below.

Best known for his role on MTV's Teen Wolf, O'Brien has largely stayed off the big screen over the past two years since he was injured on the set of Maze Runner: The Death Cure. This will mark his first live-action appearance in a movie since then (as he provided his voice for Bumblebee in 2018). Love and Monsters appears to be a light-hearted adventure story with a rom-com twist, and O'Brien's fans will likely be thrilled to see him in a starring role once more. The road trip element could provide some fun antics, especially since one of Joel's companions is a dog.

Interestingly enough, Love and Monsters has kept most of its monsters out of the trailer. Aside from the final action shot of Joel jumping into a river while being chased by a slimy creature, Love and Monsters appears to be borrowing the Jurassic Park technique of keeping its creatures out of the spotlight. Obviously, that could change in the film itself, but it's an intriguing creative choice for the trailer, which instead keeps the story firmly on Joel's journey to Aimee. Audiences can tune in next month to see more of the monsters that get in his way.
