Sometimes, an event happens in this country that is just waiting to be mocked by Saturday Night Live. Love Is Blind, the Netflix show that premiered this month, was exactly that.
We are all complicit in spending our precious hours devoted to this silly show. We were with Love Is Blind from the pods to the altar, learning the valuable lesson that, although love may not be blind, reality television shows that prioritize rushed engagements and hastily planned weddings will always be successful. It was this ultimatum that set the stage for the heaps of drama that would ensue throughout the season. It's also what made the series so unbelievably unrealistic, because no one in their right mind would propose to someone they've never seen. But this was how the show worked, so we followed along willingly, if reluctantly, until it was all over. We knew how ridiculous the whole thing was, but that's part of the fun too.
Saturday Night Live capitalized on the rage over the latest reality program that makes no sense, while also taking an opportunity to joke about the coronavirus. It took a shot at Netflix, claiming the streaming service offers "reality shows too degrading for cable." One character, Bellinina, was an obvious representation of Giannina Gibelli. Bellanina was 28 years old and her profession was "attractive." When telling her date in the pods how she contracted coronavirus, she said, “I’m a doctor. Just kidding. I licked a pole.”
Bethany, 32, works as a "parents money." And Raquel, 34, was listed as a "picture taker." She matched with Dirk, the 31-year-old boss executive. The two seemed to be playing Lauren Speed and Cameron Hamilton. During one scene, Raquel delivers a confessional, saying, "Once I’m a wife, I won’t have problems." It was poking fun at some of the less realistic statements the actual contestants made, acting as if marriage was the be all and end-all to their problems. Raquel and Dirk get engaged, even though Dirk is seriously suffering from coronavirus symptoms.
The skit was entertaining because it not only allowed us to laugh at the show, but also ourselves. We were the ones who binged this, knowing full well that we weren't gaining much from doing so. It just goes to show that we may not learn much from these dating reality shows, but there is something comforting in a sense of community that forms from collectively critiquing a show we all believe is trash.
