Jessica Batten made quite the impression on the Netflix reality series Love is Blind. Her indecisiveness about her feelings towards Mark Cuevas and her struggle to cope with Matt Barnett rejecting her for Amber Pike left many feeling she was the villain of the show. Though an overwhelming amount of fans think Jessica is bad news, creator of Love is Blind Chris Coelen thinks differently.

The journey of Jessica and Mark had a rocky start from the very beginning. In the first episode, Jessica connects with Mark and Barnett immediately having her heart torn. Complicating things further, Barnett finds himself connecting with Jessica, Amber and Lauren Chamblin (LC), leaving the regional manager, technically, involved in two love triangles. Things between Jessica and Barnett heat up when Barnett tells Jessica he's ready to propose but that quickly changes when the next day he retracts his statement. Ultimately, he chose and married Amber in the end. Though upset and struggling with Barnett's abrupt change of mind Jessica goes on to say "yes" to a marriage proposal from Mark.

After overcoming the pods the then-34-year-old Jessica and 24-year-old Mark went on to prepare for a potential lifetime together. The journey was an emotional rollercoaster, as Jessica struggled with developing physical chemistry and overlooking her concerns with their 10-year age difference. Her repeated acknowledgment of Mark's age, drunken behavior and admitted physical attraction to Barnett never moved Mark to walk away but raised questions among fans if she truly loved him.

Jessica Love is Blind

While fans turned to creating meme's about Jessica's behavior and nicknaming her Messica, Chris Coelen has taken a different stance. In the latest podcast episode of Love in Sight, Coelen shared with Giannina he believes Jessica truly loved Mark. To back his claim he describes the moment Jessica first sees Mark,  "It's almost like the wind is sucked out of her body...when you see her and it's so authentic and so real and she talks about the fact that she fell in love with someone, not for how he looked, and he is her person." He continues with, "Even in that moment she talks about how there will be people who will have judgement, right, of their relationship but she doesn't care because this his her man and they're going to live well into the future together as a couple." As mentioned in the podcast, it can be debated on how Jessica's response to Mark is interpreted. Some took it as she was disappointed but continued through because she wanted to go Mexico while others, like Coelen and Giannina, believe Jessica was truly in love.

Even when asked about Jessica's claims that she was forced to continue with the show despite knowing she didn't want to be with Mark and a medical emergency her dog was experiencing Coelen defends her. "Look again I like Jessica. I think Jessica is a smart person. I think Jessica is a nice person. I think Jessica is a real person. I think Jessica has gone through a crazy time not only in the experiment and not only having her heart in all different places with Mark and Barnett but now seeing the show play back." Jessica has since agreed her time on the show was cringeworthy and Coelen sympathizes with her, "This is a crazy experience because A you go through this emotional rollercoaster, right, and then now and you make mistakes and you do things that you regret and now you have to watch it back. Just imagine you do that but now imagine you have to watch it back but the entire world is also watching all the mistakes you made and not only that they're judging you and they're throwing out ya know hate to you it's a really hard experience." His response provides perspective to Jessica's point of view and those involved in the experiment. But is this evidence Jessica loved Mark?

The realms of finding love were tested in the original Netflix series Love is Blind. Singles made themselves emotionally available to see if love can indeed be found based solely off conversation. Jessica's love for Mark deems questionable, with many instances providing reason to believe her love was not genuine. Since the airing of the show, Mark has revealed he reached out via text to Jessica after the end of their filming and she did not respond (via Express). Do you ghost someone you truly love? In typical Mark nature, he has also shared he still has nothing but love for his ex-fiancée. Amber, on the other hand, has vocally expressed her opinions about Jessica on the reunion episode, calling her "fake" for how she flirted with Barnett and pretended to be her friend and disrespecting the man she was with at the time by doing these things. Whether if it was because of Mark's age, looks or career or whether it was because of Jessica's personal struggles, she has made it clear love is not blind when it comes to her connection with Mark.
