The popular Lord of the Rings tabletop RPG The One Ring has announced an upcoming expansion titled Ruins of the Lost Realm. First released in 2011, the popular role-playing game takes players on an epic journey through Middle-earth set between The Hobbit and LOTR. Tolkien fans can immerse themselves in the Third Age by purchasing the One Ring board game starter set, and an upcoming expansion pack will create even more magical possibilities.

Designed by Francesco Nepitello and Marco Maggi, the One Ring Roleplaying Game was initially published by Cubile 7 before Free League Publishing acquired the license in 2020. The tabletop RPG serves to simulate a classic Tolkien adventure, with player characters leaving their homes in search of adventure across Middle-earth. While the rules are similar to other tabletop titles like Dungeons & Dragons, The One Ring is set apart by its focus on travel. Mechanics like attrition make exploring Middle-earth a heavy burden, and players are pushed to assume practical roles like guides and hunters. A LOTR version of Dungeons & Dragons strives to recreate the One Ring experience, but Nepitello and Maggi's official version of the RPG manages to be a one-of-a-king Middle-earth adventure.

A Free League Publishing press release has announced The One Ring: Ruins of the Lost Realm, the first expansion pack for the beloved tabletop experience. The brand-new adventure will take players to the Lone-lands of Eriador, a deserted region where the One Ring lies dormant until the events of The Lord of the Rings. Available to pre-order now, The One Ring: Ruins of the Lost Realm will come in the form of three distinct chapters: Fog Over Eriador will describe the new region, A Gathering Storm will present narrative elements to explore and Landmarks will detail 12 interesting locations to visit.

Ruins of the Lost Realm Brings The One Ring To A New Region

The One Ring Ruins of the Lost Realm

While The One Ring: Ruins of the Lost Realm will immerse tabletop fans in a unique Middle-earth time period, the survival crafting game LOTR: Return to Moria will shed light on the fantasy setting's Fourth Age. Set after the events of The Lord of the Rings, the co-op multiplayer game will follow dwarves as they fight through procedurally generated dungeons to reclaim Khazad-dûm following Gandalf's defeat of the dreaded Balrog. This era following the destruction of the One Ring has been largely ignored by Tolkien's writing and its adaptations, but Return to Moria will finally explore how dwarven society rebuilds after the War of the Ring.

The One Ring is a masterful RPG that lets Tolkien fans live out their greatest Middle-earth fantasies. The tabletop title's starter set is mostly set in The Shire and Eriador, and now Ruins of the Lost Realm will help players travel to the eerie Lone-lands. Fans of Lord of the Rings, particularly those experienced with The One Ring, can look forward to Ruins of the Lost Realm later this year.
