A new Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power trailer teases Adar's relationship to Sauron in the Prime Video series. Set during the Second Age of Middle-earth, Rings of Power begins centuries after the Dark Lord Morgoth's defeat. During this time of relative peace, the Elven warrior Galadriel searches for Sauron after her brother, Finrod, died during his search for Morgoth's servant. Instead of sailing to Valinor to live in eternal paradise, Galadriel jumps ship to continue searching for Sauron, almost perishing in the Sundering Seas before meeting Halbrand and being taken to Númenor.

On the island kingdom ruled by men, Galadriel visits a library of lore and learns that Morgoth's successor is planning to build a new realm for evil forces in the Southlands. There, Arondir is captured by Orcs and taken to a construction camp, where a network of underground tunnels are being built. After an attempted escape, Arondir is taken to meet the leader of the Orcs, Adar, the mysterious new villain introduced at the end of The Rings of Power episode 3 who is believed to be one of Sauron's alternate aliases.

However, a new Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power trailer reveals that might not be the case. Shared by GamesRadar+, the trailer shows a quick glimpse of Adar presiding over an army of Orcs wielding flaming torches. The new footage is accompanied by some raspy voiceover from Adar teasing his relationship with Sauron: "You cannot defeat Sauron. Soon, Middle-earth will be ours." Check out the trailer below:

The Rings of Power Adar

Based on this new Rings of Power trailer - which reveals a little more information about the mysterious villain's motives - it's unlikely that Adar is Sauron in disguise, despite what Galadriel and Arondir have assumed. The way he refers to Sauron would put that theory to rest, provided it isn't a fiction meant to throw people off. Based on the voiceover in this trailer, it's more likely that Adar is one of Sauron's lieutenants. Theories also suggest he is an Elf who originally created the Orcs considering his name is an Elvish word that translates to "father."

Played by Game of Thrones star Joseph Mawle, Adar is a brand new character created for The Rings of Power, so any backstory is certainly possible. For now, all that is known for certain is he's the leader of a band of Orcs, though Adar's actual identity or his objective there remains a mystery. Audiences haven't even seen a clear view of his face yet, though that should change in the fourth episode of Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power premiering this Friday.
