New story details for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings Of Power season 2 tease how Sauron will figure into the upcoming episodes. Based on the beloved fantasy novels by author J.R.R. Tolkien, The Rings of Power chronicles the events of the Second Age of Middle-earth as darkness rises during an otherwise prosperous era. Prime Video's new fantasy series takes place thousands of years before the events of Peter Jackson's acclaimed adaptation of The Lord of the Rings, featuring some returning characters that audiences will already be familiar with, like Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) and Elrond (Robert Aramayo), and many fresh faces as well.
One familiar character that has yet to reveal themselves in The Rings of Power is Sauron. The villain, who was featured in his human form in the prologue to The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and later as an all-seeing eye perched atop a tower, remains a constant shadow over the events and characters in The Rings of Power. Episode 6 seemingly brought audiences one step closer to finally finding out who Sauron really is in The Rings of Power, with the episode ending with a massive volcanic eruption and the apparent birth of Mount Doom.
Per a new report from THR, story details for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 tease the role Sauron will play in the upcoming batch of episodes. Although the report is short on specifics, Sauron is said to appear in his "fair form" and be a major player next season, seemingly confirming that audiences will soon find out what the villain looks like. Sauron will also be much more deceptive in The Rings of Power season 2, a big departure from the mace-wielding Dark Lord of evil seen in The Fellowship of the Ring's prologue.
Who Is Sauron In The Rings Of Power?
Since the first episode of The Rings of Power, fans have been theorizing which character could secretly be (or become) Sauron. The Stranger, the mysterious man who fell from the heavens in the show's premiere episode, is often cited as a likely candidate, but there's also a lot of evidence to suggest that he could actually be a much younger version of Gandalf, played in Jackson's The Lord of the Rings movies by Ian McKellen. Recent episodes have shown that there's clearly more to Halbrand (Charlie Vickers) than meets the eye, making him another possible character who could be Sauron.
Season 1 has effectively kept the mystery of Sauron's identity alive thus far, with a number of characters being potential candidates. Even The Rings of Power's Halbrand, seemingly the front-runner right now in terms of suspicion, could also easily not be Sauron, with the character's inner darkness potentially setting him up to become the Witch-King of Angmar instead. Many questions remain about how Sauron will feature into the remaining episodes of season 1 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, but fans can now rest assured that the character will be a crucial focus of season 2.
