According to Amazon Studios' TV head Vernon Sanders, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 will have a faster pace than season 1 and contain more exciting battle sequences. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 1 drew criticism from fans of Middle-earth who believed the story's pacing was too slow and meandering throughout. Showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay have previously addressed the critique, stating that they paced season 1 methodically in order to ensure audiences could connect with their ensemble cast and their journeys in the show.

In an interview with Deadline, Sanders stated that The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 will have a faster pace than season 1 and will include even more intense battle sequences. His comments reflect fan critique of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power's pacing while also underscoring how much will be happening in season 2 - such as massive battles - to warrant the faster pace. Check out what Sanders had to say below:

We’ve never done anything like this. So the whole production model, how to produce a show like this, the scale work, all that were things that we needed to learn for the first time in the process of making the show. We are going to be faster. We are going to be able to put more money on screen, just in terms of the scale and scope of what we’re doing now that we know how to do it. And I also think the pace of our story is going to increase in part because the story is demanding that now that everyone’s been established, the stakes are established, that we’re going to watch some characters in some lands go to war.

Why Rings Of Power Season 2 Can Have A Faster Pace Than Season 1

Rings of power Halbrand lies told Galadriel

Sanders addressing pacing should come as a relief to fans of The Rings of Power who believed the series was too slow during season 1. However, the slow pacing of season 1 was necessary so viewers could properly acclimate to the story, characters, and world of the show. Much like how the first half of The Fellowship of the Ring was setting up Frodo's adventure to Mordor, season 1 was putting its ensemble cast in all the right places for Rings of Power season 2. The time spent also allowed audiences to learn more about Galadriel, Elrond, Nori, and Arondir, as well as all the other pivotal characters featured in the show.

Now that audiences have been introduced to the Second Age of Middle-earth and all the key characters involved in the forging of the Rings of Power, season 2 can craft a faster narrative focusing on Sauron's return. The reveal that Halbrand is Sauron in season 1 marks a turning point in the series, as Sauron can now operate freely in Mordor and morph into the main threat of the series. Knowledge of Sauron's return will likely be a key factor in Rings of Power season 2, causing conflict within the factions of Middle-earth. This can lead to a faster-paced story as everyone's journeys begin to centralize on Sauron, perhaps leading to the war-like battles Sanders teased.

While it's unclear how a massive battle will come about in The Rings of Power season 2, Payne and McKay have already indicated that a multi-episode fight can be expected in the new episodes. While context for the upcoming battle remains unclear, it's possible the series will adapt the War of the Elves to the small screen, or perhaps use the war as inspiration for an original storyline. Sanders' confirmation of both a faster pace and more action exhibits The Rings of Power season 2 as a new step forward for the series and its presentation of the Second Age of Middle-earth.
