An image from The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power reveals a new character. The upcoming series is Amazon Prime Video's first foray into J.R.R. Tolkien's world of Middle-earth. Led by Star Trek Beyond writers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay as showrunners, The Rings of Power is set thousands of years before the events of the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit during the Second Age of Middle-earth, a time characterized by the rise of the dark lord Sauron and the forging of the One Ring.

The Rings of Power has been one of the more secretive projects in recent memory, along with one of the more expensive. Amazon reportedly made a billion-dollar commitment to at least five seasons of the show. Earlier this year, Amazon revealed a look at 23 characters (save for their faces) who will appear in Rings of Power, including Sauron. Supplemental looks have confirmed that two more familiar characters from the movies are also a part of this large ensemble, the Elves Galadriel (played by Morfydd Clark) and Elrond (played by Robert Aramayo).

Now, Amazon Prime has revealed a look at an entirely new character from their upcoming Lord of the Rings series. An image from The Rings of Power shows the first complete look at actor Tyroe Muhafidin in the series, who was previously cast in an undisclosed role but is now confirmed to be playing a character named Theo. Pictured below, he can be seen wielding a familiar-looking broken blade. Additionally, a new look at Bronwyn (Nazanin Boniadi), a healer who owns an apothecary in the Southlands, was also unveiled. Although unknown at the time, the first look at Theo was revealed in the previous batch of character posters which showed a hand holding the same broken sword. Upon first glance, the shattered blade immediately invoked memories of the shards of Narsil seen in the Lord of the Rings movies, but given the show's timing, they are not the same steel. Instead, Theo could have found the hilt of the storied sword Gurthang, which was broken in the famous Middle-earth tale, The Children of Húrin.

Theo is just one of many characters who will be introduced in the series and portrayed by an unknown actor. This is the biggest challenge for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power – convincing audiences to embark on a new adventure set during an earlier era in Middle Earth populated with many unfamiliar faces. However, there will be some known characters like Galadriel, Sauron, and Elrond, as well as some iconography like the Misty Mountains and Khazad-dûm that should help viewers feel more at ease.
