Simon Pegg is a music producer struggling with schizophrenia in the trailer for Lost Transmissions. He was once best known for starring in Edgar Wright’s “Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy,” but in recent years Pegg has evolved beyond the comedy persona he established in those movies to become one of the more sought-after character actors around.

Of course, everyone still loves Pegg’s comedic turns in Wright’s Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World’s End, but worldwide he’s probably now most recognized for his on-going role as the computer wiz Benji in the action-packed Mission: Impossible movies. And Pegg has also made his mark on a popular sci-fi franchise, playing Starship Enterprise engineer Scotty in the three most recent Star Trek movies (sadly, it looks like Pegg may not get a fourth chance to play Scotty). Most recently, Pegg flexed his dramatic acting muscles opposite Margot Robbie in Terminal, while also lending his talents to The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance in the role of The Chamberlain.

Pegg may have tackled his most challenging and intense role to date though in the new movie Lost Transmissions, which co-stars him with Juno Temple (Vinyl) and Alexandra Daddario (Baywatch). See a trailer for the drama from director Katharine O’Brien in the space below (via Gravitas Ventures):

In the film, which is based on a true story, Pegg plays a renowned music producer named Theo Ross who is struggling with schizophrenia. When Theo goes off his meds, his songwriter friend Hannah (Temple) must try to help him get the care he desperately needs, and finds herself chasing him through L.A. as his condition causes him to lose his grip on reality (or perhaps get more in touch with it). As the movie’s logline puts it, “Lost Transmissions is an intimate look at human emotions and the devastating reality of treating mental illness in a system that doesn’t seem equipped to deal with it.”

The subject of America’s inadequate mental health care system has of course become a prominent one in recent movies, being bought to the fore most notably by last year’s Oscar-winner Joker. Pegg’s performance in Lost Transmissions doesn’t look to be as intense as Joaquin Phoenix’s work in Joker, but it’s clear the character of Theo Ross is struggling with his own demons and this gives Pegg a chance to stretch his own acting talents into new realms his fans may not have witnessed before. The trailer promises a movie with a lot of music and also a lot of heart as Theo and Hannah experience the highs and lows of life together.
