With season 3 just ending and giving a solid conclusion to the story of the Robinsons, the likelihood of Lost In Space season 4 happening is unlikely, but here's what we know. Lost in Space is a reboot of the 1960s sci-fi TV series created by Irwin Allen. The bulk of the story takes place after an alien spaceship has crashed onto Earth, making life uninhabitable and forcing humans to travel to another colony on a planet called the Alpha Centauri. The Robinsons, one of the families chosen to travel to the colony, crashed and became lost. For three seasons, they've had to deal with different planets, robot aliens, and the conflict between themselves and the others lost with them.

Lost in Space season 3 tied up most loose ends, as the Robinson family finally reunited after having been separated at the end of Lost in Space season 2. After three seasons of journeying to Alpha Centuri, they not only reached their goal but managed to stop the alien robots trying to destroy the colony. The show has given the family a happy ending, while also leaving enough possible paths for their future should a Lost in Space season 4 be greenlit.

After an intense few seasons of conflict, mainly between each other and the other survivors of the crash, there are still many questions of how the Robinsons' lives in this new colony will play out. The show set up Alpha Centauri as a paradise land where only the best of the best could inhabit, "filled with people dedicated to building a society that will last generations to come." However, as seen through the course of the show, this is not the case, as many of the issues posed to the family arise because of conflicting interests between other survivors, such as Lost in Space's main antagonist Dr. Smith. This could hint at a Lost in Space season 4.

Back in March 2020, the official Twitter account for the show confirmed that Lost in Space season 3 would be "the third and final season." The showrunner, Zack Estrin, also gave a message on Twitter, saying, "We've always viewed this particular story of The Robinsons as a trilogy with a clear beginning, middle, and end." He also mentioned starting a new series and this was confirmed with the news that Zach Estrin has signed with Netflix to produce another Netflix Original. It's safe to assume that there will not be a Lost in Space season 4, but the show's ending was intentional and planned out by the creators from the very beginning of season 1.

Though there may be questions about how the new lives of the Robinsons and their friends will turn out in Lost in Space, all conflict set up by the show in season 1 has been finished. The alien robots have been dealt with and Dr. Smith, the main antagonist, is locked away for the time being.  The showrunners intended for it to be this way and Estrin even said that he believed the characters "deserve to catch their breath before the next mission." Lost in Space season 4 has little hope of happening, but the writers have allowed for a bit of mystery to surround the ending. The Robinsons' story may have concluded on-screen, but their future on Alpha Centauri is now up to the theories of the viewers, leaving on a note that both satisfies and leaves just a little more to be desired.

What The Lost In Space Cast Has Said About The End

Lost in Space Season 3 Cast Character Guide SR

The Lost in Space cast has expressed that they're going to miss playing the characters. Lost in Space actress Mina Sundwell (Penny Robinson) said she "enjoyed being part of her growth for the last three seasons and watching her become independent and mature." Max Jenkins, who plays Will Robinson, specified that the set pieces were an integral part of their lives over the past few years to the point where they became like home. Many of the cast find it bittersweet to be leaving filming as they've been Robinsons for so many years. Their time with Lost in Space has become a large part of them, so it's difficult to see it go. Still, even if Lost in Space season 4 never happens, the cast is happy with how the story ended and is excited for new opportunities in the future.
