The full trailer for Lost in Space season 2 offers a glimpse a the show’s impressive special effects and the adventure that awaits the Robinsons this time around. As far as blockbuster-sized series are concerned, Netflix has its fair share coming to the service ahead of the 2019 holiday season, with The Witcher and a certain big-budget reboot of a campy TV series and forgettable ‘90s movie.
It’s part of the service’s push to attract and maintain subscribers, and it’s an even more important part of the Netflix brand, now that the streaming giant is up against the likes of Apple TV+ and Disney+ — or, more to the point, the undeniable charm of Baby Yoda. So far, it seems like Netflix is holding steady against the nascent threats to its streaming dominance, something that’s undoubtedly been helped by the release of Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman and will continue to be aided when two effect-driven genre series hit the service within days of one another, just when subscribers are going to be home and looking for something new to watch this holiday season.
Lost in Space season 1 hit in 2018 and it delivered a surprisingly exciting and gorgeous-looking sci-fi drama that was also family friendly. That combination was helped by the cast that includes the always great Molly Parker and Parker Posey, as well as Toby Stephens (Black Sails) and Taylor Russell (Escape Room). And, because no series is complete without a memorable creation, Lost in Space recreated its robot to become a mechanized alien killing machine — albeit one that has taken a liking to one Will Robinson (Maxwell Jenkins). That the show has adopted a sequel naming format like Stranger Things suggests Netflix also views this series as blockbuster event. And from what’s shown in the trailer, it seems as though the company is right to do so. The opening sequence shows the Robinsons picking up where they left off at the end of season 1, meaning they’re in trouble yet again.
Trouble is as good an excuse as any for the series to make use of some spectacular special effects, all while establishing a storyline that involves the family’s search for the missing Robot, as well as their efforts to rejoin the space-faring colony it was separated from last season. All in all, it looks like Lost in Space is going to be a must-watch series this holiday.
