For some, Lost will always have the reputation of being that confusing some that had way too many mysteries to keep track of. While there are some legitimate criticisms that could be made about the show, it was so much more than a never-ending puzzle. It was filled with characters we loved and cared about. It also knew how to deliver an emotional gut-punch when one of those characters was killed off.

The series was no shy about taking out some of the fan favorites and they really made those moments matter. These were heartbreaking and tragic ends to characters we came to know so well. Here are the saddest deaths on Lost.

Anna Lucia

Michelle Rodriguez as Ana Lucia Cortez in Lost

Anna Lucia was a character that didn't last too long in the show but made a solid impression. She was introduced as a member of the survivors from the tail section of the plane. She was tough, decisive and a natural leader. She was also very untrusting of The Others which led to her death.

After capturing Ben Linus, Anna Lucia decides that he needs to die to ensure the safety of the rest of the group. However, she can't go through with it. Feeling defeated, she decides to trust Michael to get the job done. But after handing over her fun, Michael shoots her in a shocking betrayal.

Alex

Tania Raymonde as Alex in Lost

Alex is introduced on the show as one of The Others but is a rare member who seems to want to help the survivors. Alex has a complicated past as she was raised by Ben Linus as one of The Others, but only because he stole her from her mother when Alex was an infant.

Shannon

Shannon stands in front of burning wreckage in LOST

Shannon was not always a very pleasant person to be around. She started out being very selfish and uncaring to the other survivors. She even treated her step-brother Boone poorly. However, she begins to understand and change her ways, thanks largely to her romance with Sayid.

Their relationship is tested when Shannon begins seeing visions of Walt who had supposedly escaped the island. At first Sayid thinks she is seeing things, but finally sees the visions himself only for Shannon to be accidentally shot by Anna Lucia and she dies in Sayid's arms

Boone

Lost Boone

Boone was used to getting pushed around by Shannon, but he also sought to find some purpose on the island and help out the team. He eventually forms a friendship with Locke and the two begin exploring the mysterious jungles together.

The two find a plane in a tree and when Boone investigates, it falls from the tree, severely injuring him. Jack tries to save Boone but due to Locke lying about the accident, he is unable. With his last words, Boone forgives Jack for not saving him and manages to say "Tell Shannon…" before succumbing to his injuries.

Libby

Cynthia Watros as Libby in Lost

Michael's murder of Anna Lucia might have been planned, but Libby was just unfortunate collateral damage. Like Anna Lucia, she was a survivor of the tail section. When the two groups of survivors united, Libby began a sweet relationship with Hurley.

Locke

Locke Lost Character Guide

Locke is certainly one of the most interesting characters on Lost. He believes that the island has great power and seeks to uncover its mysteries. He believes the island has a purpose for him and struggles to see it through.

After several of the survivors leave the island, Locke is tasked with convincing them to come back. When he fails, he plans to kill himself, thinking he is a failure. He is talked out of it by Ben Linus only for Ben to promptly kill Locke himself who dies betrayed and confused after being lied to for so long.

Juliet

Juliet Lost Character Guide

Juliet wasn't introduced to the show until its third season but she wasted no time in becoming one of the most important characters in the series. A reluctant member of The Others, Juliet was sympathetic, kind and always looking to help people. She also developed an unexpectedly touching romance with Sawyer.

As Juliet joined forces with the crash survivors to take on The Others, she was pulled down into a big. Sawyer desperately tried to pull her out but all Juliet can do is tell him that she loves him before she falls into the darkness.

Jack

Jack and Vincent in Lost finale

The series started with the image of Jack's eyes opening, so it makes sense that it should end with his eyes closing. While the series finale didn't answer all of our questions, the final moments with Jack dying of his wounds are touching.

As we learn that the supposed alternate timeline is actually purgatory, we begin to understand that Jack is indeed dead. We see flashes of him stumbling through the island's jungle before collapsing. In another callback to the pilot episode, Vincent the dog comes to comfort him before Jack quietly slips away.

Charlie

Charlie Lost Character Guide

Charlie was one of the easiest characters on the show to like. He is fun, positive and surprisingly heroic. He is always willing to put his life on the line to help ensure the safety of his friends. It's not surprising then that he dies sacrificing himself for the greater good.

As Charlie and Desmond investigate an underwater Dharma station, Charlie learns that the supposed rescue boat waiting for them is more sinister than it seems. As the station begins to flood, Charlie seals himself in the flooding room to save Desmond and uses his last moments to warn him of the impending danger.

Jin & Sun

Daniel Dae Kim as Jin in Lost

Jin and Sun did not always have the strongest relationship but their time on the island certainly brought them closer together. They initially kept their distance from the other survivors but gradually became very valuable members of the team.

Jin and Sun are separated due to various confusing time travel elements. They are eventually reunited but in one of the show's cruelest moments, they are killed off shortly after. In a bittersweet moment, the two become trapped together in a sinking submarine. They share a heartfelt goodbye and drown while holding hands.
