Sandra Bullock reveals that she would consider breaking her "no sequel" rule for The Lost City 2. Star of movies like Miss Congeniality, Gravity, The Proposal, and Netflix's hit movie Bird Box, Bullock's next project sees the star tackle a wild action-comedy with The Lost City (previously titled The Lost City of D). The Lost City tells the story of a romance writer on a book tour who finds herself on a jungle adventure after a kidnapping attempt goes wrong.
The Lost City boasts a strong cast around Bullock, with Channing Tatum, Daniel Radcliffe, Brad Pitt, Oscar Nunez, Raymond Lee, and Patti Harrison also starring. A first trailer for the film teases plenty of laughs and an equal amount of action, with Radcliffe taking a villainous turn and Tatum playing a bumbling cover model. The Lost City is directed by Aaron and Adam Nee, whose previous directing credits include The Last Romantic and Band of Robbers. The Nee brothers are also slated to direct the upcoming Masters of the Universe, which isn't due out until 2024.
In a new interview with Variety, Bullock reveals that, even though the movie isn't even out yet, she might consider breaking her rule about not making sequels in order to do The Lost City 2. Bullock explains that, now that she has more experience and more power over her own projects, she's more comfortable fighting for what she wants out of her movies. She also claims that, if writer Dana Fox were to come up with a good enough idea, The Lost City 2 might actually happen. Check out Bullock's full comment below:
“I had a ‘no sequel’ rule when I didn’t have the benefit of fighting for what I really wanted. I feel like, in my old age, I’m learning to fight for the things that I think would be best on screen — and I don’t care who comes away from the meeting angry.
“I don’t know that I’d want to do a sequel, but look — we had Dana Fox as a writer. If Dana Fox could come up with something brilliant… there you go."
Bullock revealed her "no sequel" rule about ten years ago, following the success of her team-up with Melissa McCarthy for The Heat. While Bullock has starred in a great many hits over the course of her career, two movies that didn't quite meet expectations were both sequels. Speed 2: Cruise Control is largely considered a lesser movie in every way compared to the first Speed, which saw her star alongside Keanu Reeves. Similarly, Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous failed to reach the same heights either critically or commercially as the first film.
It remains to be seen whether The Lost City will be a hit, but Bullock's comments about a potential sequel would suggest that she is confident in the film. However, Bullock also recently revealed that she's looking to take a break from acting, meaning that if a sequel to The Lost City does happen, it likely won't be for a while. It's unclear how successful The Lost City will be, but it certainly sounds like a sequel is dependent upon whether Fox can come up with a good enough idea. The Lost City is slated to release in theaters later this month, on March 25th and, if it does end up getting the green light, The Lost City 2 is likely quite a while away.
