A Lord of the Rings video imagines humorous offscreen conversations. Based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson’s cinematic trilogy was one of the most ambitious and successful of all time. Comprised of three installments from 2001 to 2003, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King, the trilogy grossed nearly $3 billion worldwide and received numerous accolades and awards, including Best Picture for its final chapter.
The Lord of the Rings trilogy takes place in the fantasy world of Middle-earth and follows a hobbit named Frodo Baggins' (Elijah Wood), quest to destroy the One Ring by tossing it into the fiery depths of Mount Doom, where it was originally forged. Joining Frodo on his quest are his friends from the Shire, Samwise Gamgee (Sean Astin), Merry (Dominic Monaghan), and Pippin (Billy Boyd). The four eventually meet up with Gandalf (Ian McKellen), Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), Gimli (John Rhys-Davies), Legolas (Orlando Bloom), and Boromir (Sean Bean) to form the Fellowship of the Ring.
While the last film in the trilogy released nearly two decades ago, its cultural influence is still apparent, most recently in a video from Joz Norris, who imagines some of the small talk that might have occurred offscreen during the Fellowship’s long and treacherous journey to Mordor. The writer and comedian was inspired to make the video during a 6-day hike of his own and filmed it right on the spot. Watch the video below:
It probably wouldn’t have hurt the Lord of the Rings trilogy to include a little more downtime and small talk, but since each film’s runtime is around 3 hours (with the extended versions closer to 4 hours) there likely wasn’t much time left for scenes not crucial to the plot. However, there is a famously amusing scene in Fellowship of the Ring in which Merry and Pipp discuss a hobbit’s meal schedule after Aragon denies them second breakfast.
With Amazon’s highly-anticipated Lord of the Rings series currently in production, perhaps Norris is hoping to land a role on the writing staff. This video is certainly not a bad audition tape, as it imagines a slightly believable yet also tongue-in-cheek depiction of what Lord of the Rings small talk might sound like.
