When Daedalic Entertainment revealed they were developing a new Lord of the Rings game, many fans likely weren't expecting the title to focus on Gollum. Originally known as the hobbit Smeagol, Gollum was corrupted after years spent hoarding the Ring of Power until it was claimed by Bilbo Baggins. Gollum's adventure in Lord of the Rings: Gollum will take players across Middle-Earth as they explore the Lord of the Rings trilogy through the eyes of the spindly creature.

Previous LOTR games such as Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War were restricted to Mordor and offered no opportunity to explore territories beyond Sauron's realm. Despite previous games' limitations, Daedalic has assured Gollum will venture beyond Mordor's borders. Various trailers and interviews detail some of the locations that have been confirmed for the upcoming game.

Similar to Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War, Lord of the Rings: Gollum will begin in Mordor. More specifically, players will begin in the prisons of Barad-Dur. The game will explore Gollum's time as a prisoner beneath the Dark Tower, and allow players to take part in his dashing escape from the Dark Lord's lands. Lord of the Rings: Gollum will be less focused on combat and more centered around stealth and parkour, leading to a completely new experience of Mordor than fans of Middle-Earth games have encountered before.

Lord of the Rings: Gollum Will Take Players To Elven Lands

Lord of the Rings: Gollum's Steam page also confirms that the game will explore Gollum's time with the Elves of Mirkwood. Fans of Tolkien's works will recall that Gollum spent time in Mirkwood's prisons after being captured by Aragorn. Daedalic has confirmed that players will encounter familiar characters but has not confirmed which faces may appear. Given the confirmation of Mirkwood's eventual entrance into the game, it's likely Aragorn will be a character in Lord of the Rings: Gollum. The realm of Mirkwood has been portrayed in the Hobbit films before, but it's unknown what the elven realm will look like in-game.

Lord of the Rings: Gollum's trailers and sneak peeks have shown off several other locations, including a lush jungle and the barren landscapes of Mordor. Though players will have some choice in the narrative arc of Gollum and Smeagol's internal battle, Daedalic has informed fans they will not impact Tolkien's stories. Given the specificity of Mordor and Mirkwood's locations, and LOTR story events that must take place, the Dead Swamps in which Gollum is captured are sure to make an appearance. It is currently unknown what other locations the game will explore.

Though many aspects of the game have not been revealed, fans will be able to experience many parts of Middle-Earth in LOTR: Gollum through an unexpected protagonist. Taking the role of a character such as Gollum could shake up the normal expectations of Tolkien heroes, and prevent Daedalic's project from being grouped in with other Lord of the Rings titles. Lord of the Rings: Gollum will be available exclusively on consoles, and release sometime in 2022.
