Warner Bros. reveals that Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies are getting a 31-disc collector's edition in October to celebrate The Fellowship of the Rings' 20th anniversary. The epic fantasy franchise is based on J.R.R. Tolkien's novels The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and set in the mystical world of Middle-earth. The former series followed Bilbo Baggins as he journeys in search of the treasure guarded by Smaug the dragon while the latter centers on Bilbo's cousin Frodo as he inherits the iconic One Ring and ventures with his Hobbit friends to destroy it in the volcano of Mount Doom to prevent the evil Lord Sauron from finally conquering the entire realm.

After initially pitching the concept to Miramax and being rejected, Jackson would ultimately partner with New Line Cinema to produce the Lord of the Rings trilogy, each film based on the three volumes of Tolkien's source material, which would score rave reviews and become one of the most influential and highest-grossing film series of all-time, grossing a combined $2.991 billion and winning 17 of its 30 Oscar nominations. After years of financial suits with the studio, Jackson would eventually reunite with New Line and Guillermo del Toro for an adaptation of The Hobbit with the latter set to direct, though he would later depart due to ongoing delays and Jackson would take back over, expanding the novel into another three-part film series instead of the original two-film plan. Kicking off in 2012, The Hobbit franchise saw a more mixed reception from critics and audiences alike but would still become one of the highest-grossing film series of all-time with a combined gross of $2.938 billion.

A few months ahead of the film's 20th anniversary, Warner Bros. has announced the Middle Earth Collection Ultimate Collector's Edition compiling Jackson's Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies into a 31-disc box set. The set includes all six movies on both 4K Ultra-HD and Blu-ray discs featuring the theatrical end extended editions for all films, as well as the original Cannes Film Festival presentation reel, footage from the Lord of the Rings cast reunion via Alamo Drafthouse, a 64-page booklet featuring costumes, photography and production notes from the film and art cards featuring travel posters and images from iconic locations throughout Middle-earth. The Lord of the Rings films have seen a multitude of home media releases since their theatrical debuts in the early aughts, but the Middle-Earth Collection is sure to be the most enticing yet for fans of Tolkien's world. In addition to including both the theatrical and extended versions of the trilogy, the addition of the Cannes Film Festival presentation reel is an interesting new bit of footage for those who enjoy revisiting the original titles. While The Hobbit films may see a more mixed reception from fans, bringing all of Jackson's works into one box set should prove a worthwhile addition to any collection.

Twenty years later and The Lord of the Rings franchise continues to be one of the most influential to grace the screen and one studios continually look to recapture. While The Hobbit may not have worked out for New Line in the same critical sense, it was still a major financial hit, and HBO's adaptation of George R. R. Martin's Game of Thrones novels proved just as successful for the premium cable network. The wait for the latest collector's edition is almost here as the Middle-Earth collection hits shelves on October 26.
