Lord & Miller Met With DC About The Flash Before Leaving Han Solo

Phil Lord and Chris Miller reportedly met with DC Films about directing The Flash movie during a production hiatus on Lucasfilm's Han Solo. Warner Bros' DC Extended Universe officially launched last year with the premiere of Zack Snyder's Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, which introduced a host of new heroes to the world that kicked off in Man of Steel. Among those heroes were Batman (Ben Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), The Flash (Ezra Miller), and Cyborg (Ray Fisher) - all of which were planned to receive solo movies. However, though The Flash was announced as part of the original DCEU slate, it has since lost two directors and is currently without a director and release date.

Since the departure of The Flash movie's last director, Rick Famuyiwa, Warner Bros and DC Films have been looking for replacements. Now, a new report claims they met with Lord and Miller - the creative partnership well known for their work on The LEGO Movie and 21 Jump Street - while the directing duo were on a production hiatus from another blockbuster franchise installment.

The Wrap is reporting Lord and Miller met with DC Films about directing The Flash while on a production hiatus from Lucasfilm's untitled Han Solo anthology film as part of the Star Wars franchise. The directing pair of Lord and Miller have exited Han Solo, ostensibly leaving their schedule wide open to take over the reigns of The Flash.

Of course, the duo were originally tapped by Warner Bros in 2015 to develop the story and pen the script for The Flash. Later that year, the studio hired Seth Grahame-Smith to direct, with an eye toward reworking the script. And, after Grahame-Smith departed, Famuyiwa also contributed his own script revisions for The Flash. It's unclear just how much the story and script for The Flash has changed through its several rounds of edits, but if Lord and Miller were to return to the project, they could potentially bring back their original ideas - or go in a new direction entirely.

That said, this report doesn't necessarily mean Lord and Miller are officially on board as the new directors of The Flash. Warner Bros has met with a number of other potential helmers in recent months, including Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future), Matthew Vaughn (Kingsman: The Secret Service), and Sam Raimi (Spider-Man); plus, Kevin Smith has tossed his own hat into the ring, though he hasn't had an official meeting with Warner Bros or DC. It remains to be seen who exactly Warner Bros eventually hires to direct The Flash.

Still, Lord and Miller became attached to direct the Han Solo spinoff shortly after joining The Flash as screenwriters, which indicated they may have had the opportunity to also direct the DCEU film but passed in favor of the Star Wars anthology movie. Now after exiting Han Solo over creative differences, they may return to The Flash, this time as writers and directors - though that's entirely speculation at this point. Of course, given their sudden exit from a massive blockbuster property like Star Wars, Lord and Miller may leave franchise filmmaking behind entirely. We'll have to wait and see what the duo decides to do next.
