Akiva Schaffer, Andy Samberg and Jorma Taccone formed as The Lonely Island in the early 1990s after meeting in high school and they quickly achieved mainstream success. From 2005-2011 the trio worked on a series of shorts for Saturday Night Live and, as a result of their hugely popular music videos (D*ck in a Box, Like a Boss and I’m on a Boat), the group released their first album Incredibad in 2009.

The Lonely Island proved that they were not about to step out of the spotlight either, after Universal Pictures announced that a top-secret film project featuring the musical comedy trio had begun production last year. The plot details were largely kept under wraps, apart from revealing that the movie would be set in the world of music.

However, during a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Samberg shared a first look at the teaser poster for their latest collaboration. The one-sheet features the inspirational film title Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping with the lead character appropriately dressed and striking a pose for his debut as popstar ‘Connor4Real'.

To further persuade you to buy a ticket to this gig, Universal Pictures have dropped the mic on the official synopsis too:

“Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is headlined by musical digital-shorts superstars Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, collectively known as The Lonely Island. The comedy goes behind the scenes as singer/rapper Conner4Real (Samberg) faces a crisis of popularity after his sophomore album flops, leaving his fans, sycophants and rivals all wondering what to do when he’s no longer the dopest star of all.”

Popstar (2016) Movie Poster

Co-directed by Schaffer and Taccone, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping will be written and produced by The Lonely Island with prolific blockbuster comedy producer’s Judd Apatow (The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Bridesmaids and Trainwreck) and Rodney Rothman (Get Him to the Greek, Forgetting Sarah Marshall and The Five Year Engagement) also filling producer’s chairs.

The Universal comedy, starring Sarah Silverman, Tim Meadows and Maya Rudolph, also promises a series of cameo appearances from some of the biggest names in the music industry, meaning that a potential spoiler was shared a number of weeks ago when Apatow posted an Instagram photo alongside Schaffer and The Beatles’ Ringo Starr.

Will Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping have enough star power to sell out (at the box office) and become a chart success or will it flop alongside its rivals Warner Bros. Pictures' upcoming drama Me Before You and Paramount Pictures' Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows? Taccone and Schaffer’s individual directorial efforts haven’t performed particularly well at the box office in recent years, but they could strike it lucky with Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping by reconnecting with the audience from the troupe's first feature-film Hot Rod (which was released in 2007).

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping will open in U.S. theaters on June 3rd, 2016.
