Riot Games, the developer behind the massively popular MOBA League of Legends, has announced that one of the game's most popular characters will be getting a mini-rework in the upcoming season. League of Legends Season 12 is set to begin in early 2022 and will feature changes that include new Elemental Dragons, changes to the game's items, and the addition of objective bounties. However, League of Legends will also bring in new champions and rework old ones throughout Season 12.

Champion reworks in League of Legends are quite common, offering a way to update older champions to compete with the new releases. League of Legends currently has a roster of over 150 champions, some of whom were released as far back as 2010. Updates help keep these older champions from falling completely out of favor or being unviable in games. Though larger updates, such as League of Legends' upcoming Udyr rework, can completely re-shape a champion's look, playstyle, and role in the game, some champions get smaller touches, changing just one or two abilities. That appears to be what is in store for League of Legends's Nine-Tailed Fox.

In a dev post, League of Legends has teased that they are exploring a mini-rework of the mid lane champion Ahri as part of the overall changes coming in Season 12. The devs compared the scope of Ahri's upcoming rework to that of Lucian in Season 11, which was focused on bringing the spell-slinging marksman out of the mid lane and into the bot lane. This likely means that Ahri will receive some minor changes to one or two spells, but her core identity as a mobile mage will remain unchanged.

League of Legends Season 12

The developers did note that the change would follow the upcoming Janna mini-rework. Janna received changes recently on League of Legends' public beta environment (PBE) that would put more power into her identity as a wind-controlling enchanter. The changes were scheduled to be added in the first patch of League of Legends Season 12, but Riot recently announced they would be pushing the Janna mini-rework back for further testing.

Ahri is one of the most popular and iconic champions in League of Legends, yet her play rate and presence in pro play have fallen significantly. This rework could be an opportunity for Riot to reinvigorate her passionate fan base and make her a more attractive pick overall. Whatever the case, Riot is making a concerted effort to bring Ahri into the meta of League of Legends Season 12.
